# How long do you walk to the metro

Across 112,894 analysed points in Bucharest, the median to the nearest metro station is 12.3 minutes on foot — 40.3% are within 10 minutes of a station. We measured 4,372 streets, 57 stations, 6 sectors. Search your street.

The city median is 12.3 minutes — half of the 112,894 analysed points are closer to the metro, half farther. No street is at zero (0.0%): 0 minutes would mean an address right on the station point.

The farthest from the metro, of the streets with at least 20 addresses, is Strada Milcov, with 123 addresses in the index: 90.0 minutes (7,201 metres) to Râul Doamnei. At 0.1 sit 2 streets with at least 20 addresses — tied at the displayed decimal; we show the one with the most addresses, Șoseaua Mihai Bravu, with 239 addresses in the index: 0.1 minutes, by Piața Iancului.

The numbers measure the straight line to the nearest of the 64 station nodes on the map; a street's station is its node's station. The map covers 57 stations. A minute means 80 metres of easy walking.

## Where each street's station is

The map shows how long you walk from each place to the nearest metro station: green is close, red is far. The columns are the 57 stations, in line colours; height says how many streets are assigned to each. Grey is outside the city — the map does not measure there.

This is the whole city's distance from the metro: the surface says the minutes, the columns are the stations. Colour says the band, column height says how many streets are assigned to the station.

Only the stations: 57 on the map, in the 5 lines' colours — interchange stations wear the first line's colour. Serving the most streets is Eroii Revoluției (M2), with 476 streets. Line M2 gathers the most streets: 1,748.

For example, Șoseaua Mihai Bravu, with 239 addresses in the index: 0.1 minutes on foot (10 metres) to Piața Iancului. Press “Jump to station” and the map takes you there.

Only the streets, through the surface: Strada Milcov is the farthest (90.0 minutes), Șoseaua Mihai Bravu shares the top with Calea Șerban Vodă (0.1 minutes). Rankings keep only streets with at least 20 addresses.

Only the sectors: the farthest is Sector 5, with a median of 23.7 minutes, followed by Sector 2 at 14.8. The closest is Sector 6, at 8.7 minutes.

## Your street's station

Type a street. You get the minutes on foot to the nearest metro station, the distance in metres and the station itself — with a button that takes you to it on the map. The number is the minimum across the street's addresses: the closest point sets it.

## What the minutes mean

Every street and every map cell is coloured by the minutes on foot to the nearest metro station; the bands are the same everywhere. A minute means 80 metres of easy walking, straight line — no detours, no crossings.

- **At zero** (0 minutes): No street sits here: 0.0 after rounding would mean under 4 metres from a node — and no displayed value rounds to 0.0 today.
- **Close** (0–5 minutes): Șoseaua Mihai Bravu (0.1 minutes) sits here — tied at the displayed decimal with Calea Șerban Vodă.
- **Nearby** (5–10 minutes): 40.3% of analysed points are within 10 minutes of a station; the city median is 12.3 minutes.
- **Far** (10–15 minutes): Strada Popa Nan (10.1 minutes) sits here.
- **Very far** (15–30 minutes): Șoseaua București-Ploiești (23.7 minutes) sits here.
- **Desert** (over 30 minutes): Strada Milcov sits here, at 90.0 minutes — the farthest of the streets with at least 20 addresses.

The minute is our own reckoning: 80 metres, an easy city pace, the same for every street.

The bands are this analysis's cuts, fitted to the spread of minutes: “at zero” means 0.0 after rounding (under 4 metres from a node) — an empty band (0 streets); “desert” above 30 minutes. The upper bound belongs to the band: 5.0 minutes falls in “Close”. Every ranking shows the number to one decimal.

## How it is measured

Each street takes its station from around its addresses: for every point in the index, the straight-line distance to the nearest station node; the street's number is the minimum — the closest point sets it. The index keeps at most 60 points per street — 602 streets hit the cap — and the card shows indexed addresses, not evaluated points.

The stations are the 57 on OpenStreetMap — 64 metro nodes inside Bucharest, each with its verified-network lines. Distance runs to the nearest node, never averaged: the “Gara de Nord 1” and “Gara de Nord 2” nodes stand 220 metres apart, so their mean would be no mapped node. Metrorex counts 64 stations by line — not the same 64 as the nodes: 22+15+16+8+10−7, from the report’s section table (the 7 shared M1/M3 stations counted once). Above the 57 unique ones sit Dristor and Nicolae Grigorescu twice over — the report names “Dristor 2” and “Nicolae Grigorescu 2” — plus the interchanges counted on each line (Piața Victoriei, Gara de Nord, Basarab, Eroilor, Piața Unirii).

A street with under 3 addresses in the index gets no number; 506 streets stayed unmeasured — they show as such, not as zero. City shares are computed over 112,894 analysed points. Sector medians use the points inside each sector's ring; 3,958 points fall in no ring but count toward the city.

Limits: the line is straight — detours, fences and boulevards with no crossing are invisible, so the distance is a lower bound on the real route, and the minutes an estimate at an assumed pace: real time depends on route and pace. The point is the mapped station node, not a verified platform and not the entrance: entrances are not searchable points on the map. And maps age: a station opened after the extract is missing until the next one.

Distances run in a local projection — checked on 200 points against haversine: maximum error 0.558%.

## Stations and sectors

The 57 stations on the map, each with its lines and its assigned-street count: each street counts toward its closest point's station. 1 station has no street assigned: Tudor Arghezi — every nearby street's minimum falls to another station. Ranked first is Eroii Revoluției (M2), the nearest station for 476 streets. Line M2 gathers the most streets: 1,748 (interchange stations count on each line). Names are the map's own, word for word.

### Sectors

The farthest is Sector 5, with a median of 23.7 minutes; next comes Sector 2, at 14.8. The closest is Sector 6, at 8.7 minutes — 61.6% of analysed points are within 10 minutes of a station.
