# What do your blood pressure numbers actually mean?

The first number is the peak of a pressure wave. The second is the level pressure falls to before the next heartbeat. The gap between them says something as well. Enter your reading and see what the machine is measuring.

## Why some languages say “14/9” for 140/90

Romanian and French often drop the final zero in speech. “14 with 9” or “14/9 de tension” is 140/90 mmHg. English usually says 140 over 90. It is the same unit.

## One cycle, two numbers

The heart pumps in pulses. Organs need nearly continuous flow. The elastic aorta reconciles the two: it expands in ejection and recoils in diastole. The curve below is arterial pressure, not an electrocardiogram. An ECG is electrical activity. 120 is the peak. 80 is the trough before the next beat. The distance between them is pulse pressure.

## Why two websites can tell you different things

130/80 in clinic is elevated BP under ESC 2024. Under AHA/ACC 2025 it is stage 1 hypertension. The disagreement is a difference of framework and wording. Cardiovascular risk moves continuously; thresholds help clinical decisions. Biology does not jump between 139 and 140.

## The diagnostic threshold is not the treatment target

“From what number is it called hypertension?” is one question. “What pressure should treatment aim for?” is another. ESC 2024 keeps office ≥140/90 as the definition, and recommends, for many adults on BP-lowering therapy who tolerate it, an on-treatment systolic target of 120–129 mmHg, with exceptions for symptomatic orthostatic hypotension, age 85 and over, important frailty or limited life expectancy. The calculator does not prescribe drugs. Decisions depend on repeated BP, cardiovascular risk, existing disease and context.
