# Replacements, not additions

In Q2 2026, large suppliers in Great Britain reported 1.067 million domestic smart-meter installations: 502,740 new installations and 564,371 replacements. Replacements made up 52.9% of quarterly activity.

## One million, two different jobs

The exact total in the DESNZ workbook is 1,067,111. It is the sum of new installations and replacements. “Replacement” means an existing smart or advanced meter was already there. It does not automatically mean the old meter had failed.

## Replacements became most of the activity

The replacement share of installations was 14.3% in Q1 2022, 30.0% in Q2 2025, and 52.9% in Q2 2026. This is the share of installation activity, not a failure rate.

## A flow is not coverage

At the end of June 2026, around 75% of properties had a smart-mode electricity meter, while 25% had a non-smart meter. This is a stock measure, separate from the installations reported during the quarter.

## What counts as a replacement?

DESNZ includes end-of-life changes and communications-compatibility work. The source does not publish a breakdown of reasons and does not show how many homes received a first smart meter.

## Method and sources

Replacement share = replacements ÷ (new installations + replacements). The data cover domestic properties and large suppliers in Great Britain. The bulletin rounds the values to 1,067,000 total, 503,000 new, and 564,000 replacements; the table keeps the exact workbook values.

This does not establish a failure rate, estimate time to full coverage, or measure a household outcome. The next check is planned after the Q3 2026 release, scheduled for 26 November 2026.
