# The 1961 eclipse in Bucharest: two minutes under cloud

The total solar eclipse of 15 February 1961 passed through Bucharest as a public event, a scientific observation and a test of the weather. Newspapers, schools, observatories, scientific papers and later institutional records preserve what happened.

## The finding

The eclipse was total in Bucharest. Cloud hid totality from the ground under the reported atmospheric conditions. Observation continued through measurements, the partial phase and the aircraft.

- Bucharest was inside the totality zone. In the period’s decimal-minute notation, contemporary press gives first contact at 08:43.2, maximum at 09:54.8 and last contact at 11:12.0.
- The Romanian Academy photoelectric report records cloudiness from 8/10 to 10/10 and stratocumulus. Totality could not be observed optically from Bucharest Observatory.
- An IL-18 flew at roughly 2,200–2,500 m above the cloud deck and returned five photographs of the corona.
- The popular contemporary duration is about 2m10s; the Academy contact times and modern city calculations are kept as distinct records.

## Story

### Bucharest was inside the totality zone.

The northern boundary of totality ran near Turnu Severin, Pitești, Târgoviște, Ploiești, Mizil and Brăila. In the period’s decimal-minute notation, Bucharest had first contact at 08:43.2, maximum at 09:54.8 and last contact at 11:12.0.

### Cloud limited the ground observation.

The photoelectric report records cloudiness from 8/10 to 10/10 and stratocumulus. The apparatus was ready, but cloud blocked optical observation of totality at Bucharest Observatory.

### The aircraft climbed above the deck.

An IL-18 flew at roughly 2,200–2,500 m. The team continued the observation above the cloud and obtained five photographs of the corona.

## Archive boundary

In Bucharest, the eclipse was total. Cloud hid totality from the ground. Observation continued through measurements, the partial phase and the aircraft.

The corpus below covers digitised and searchable Romanian material. It does not include undigitised, private, military, paywalled or unindexed archives.
