# For teachers

Classroom materials and interactive projects for language, science and civics. When a project uses school data, its page explains who was counted and for which period.

## Start with an activity

A curriculum, vocabulary and questions students can explore for themselves.

- Romania’s new AI course for high schools (2027): the curriculum explained, topic by topic, with evidence and worksheets (https://mariuscomper.uk/programa-ia-liceu/en/)

The optional course “Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Digital Citizenship” reaches Romanian high schools in 2027–2028. What the curriculum contains, how a school takes it up, what the evidence says on each topic, and classroom tools.

- How many Romanian words do you know (https://mariuscomper.uk/test-vocabular/en/)

A two-minute Romanian vocabulary test: of 125 words (100 drawn at random from the DEX, 25 invented) you tap the ones you could explain and learn how many of the dictionary's 64,907 words you know, with a margin of error. The dictionary is drawn as a sunflower: the commonest words at the centre, and at the rim the 20,825 that never occur in 332 million words of subtitles. Creangă, Eminescu, Rebreanu and the Constitution sit on the same flower. For native speakers, heritage speakers and learners.

- How many school days are left? (https://mariuscomper.uk/cate-zile-de-scoala-mai-sunt/en/)

Pick the county and class track to see how many real course days are left until the next break and the summer holidays, in the 2026–2027 school year.

- The hottest year of grandparents’ youth would now be a cool one (https://mariuscomper.uk/clima-bunicilor/en/)

NASA’s temperature record on a globe, year by year from 1880 to 2025. Around London, nine of the last ten years were warmer than 1959, the hottest year between 1951 and 1980. With the numbers for 6,552 towns and cities and a family’s birth years. In Romanian and English.

## What the data say about schools

Staffing, attendance and changes tracked from one place to another.

- Romania’s physics teacher shortage, school by school, 2025–2026 (https://mariuscomper.uk/orele-de-fizica/en/)

Of the main school subjects, physics is the one Romania’s national teacher placement covers worst: 47% of hours unplaced on 3 September 2026, against 18% in biology. Every school on a map, 2025 and 2026.

- Where do the children go to school? (https://mariuscomper.uk/unde-merg-copiii/en/)

In autumn 2025, Romania counted 85 primary-school pupils per 100 births from 2015–2019: 91 in towns and 79 in communes. For each of 3,181 localities, the map compares births assigned by INS with pupils enrolled in its schools; it does not identify where individual children attend.

- Romanian villages left without a school, 2013–2026 (https://mariuscomper.uk/trei-din-patru/en/)

Of 6,833 villages with a school on the Ministry of Education's 2013–14 list, 1,329 have none in 2025–26. A map of every village over 13 years, and why the official count of rural schools (−76%) does not mean as many schools closed.

- Romanian in England's classrooms: how many pupils, council by council (https://mariuscomper.uk/romanian-in-english-schools/)

How many pupils in England's schools have Romanian as their first language, council by council, from the school census: about 8,100 in 2012, 94,000 in January 2023, by then the fifth most common first language after English. Find your council.

## Schools in their surroundings

Risks and histories you can place on a map or bring into a lesson.

- Your child’s school on the Education Ministry’s seismic-risk list (https://mariuscomper.uk/scoala-cu-bulina/en/)

The Education Ministry’s 21 September 2026 export lists 161 Class I rows for building/use entries across 133 units in 32 counties. It has no unique building IDs.

- Slot halls near schools in Romania: map of all 2,102 halls and the walk to the nearest school (https://mariuscomper.uk/pacanelele-de-langa-scoala/en/)

ONJN’s register of 26 October 2026 lists 2,102 slot halls in 147 towns and communes. Of the 1,946 placed on the map, about 59% stand within a 300-metre walk of a school or kindergarten, slightly more than the shops on the same streets (56%). Three hundred metres is the distance in the bill Romania’s Senate passed in 2023; since 2026 local councils decide. The most machines per head are in Oltenia, the south-west.

- How Romania learned to read: Haret's school, 1899–1930 (https://mariuscomper.uk/haret/en/)

From 22 to 56 literates in 100, county by county, across three censuses. Haret's laws, the village school and the Abecedar exam.
