# Your family’s climate, place by place

Choose a Romanian locality and your family’s birth years. Open three tools about temperature, tropical nights and drought, each with its own data and limits.

## Three measurements, the same place.

Mean temperature in a person’s early years, summer nights with minimum temperatures of at least 20 °C and tree-ring estimates of drought tell different stories. Choose the place and birth years; each tool opens results calculated from its own data.

Only the birth years and selected locality go into the family link after you create it. No names are requested; until then, your choices stay on this device.

You can open the projects below, but locality search and birth-year links need JavaScript.

## Choose a locality

The list uses the locality names in the tropical-nights index. Search by locality, administrative unit or county.

## Add birth years

Add up to six years. Clima bunicilor shows the mean for each person’s first 15 calendar years. Nopți tropicale shows summers from ages five to fourteen where data is available.

GISTEMP: complete annual data for 1880–2025; the recent mean uses 2016–2025. Tropical nights: full data through 2025; 2026 is provisional.

## Explore the measurements for this place

The link will show the locality and birth years you chose. Share it only if you want the person opening it to see them.

## The three projects and their data

- The hottest year of grandparents’ youth would now be a cool one (https://mariuscomper.uk/clima-bunicilor/en/)

NASA’s temperature record on a globe, year by year from 1880 to 2025. Around London, nine of the last ten years were warmer than 1959, the hottest year between 1951 and 1980. With the numbers for 6,552 towns and cities and a family’s birth years. In Romanian and English.

- Tropical nights in Romania: how many summer nights never drop below 20 °C, town by town (1950–2026) (https://mariuscomper.uk/noaptea-tropicala/en/)

A tropical night is one when the minimum temperature never drops below 20 °C. Galați, in Romania’s eastern lowlands, averaged 5.5 a summer in 1961–1990 and 28.9 in 2016–2025; Craiova 1.9 and 12.4. Every summer since 1950, night by night, for any Romanian town or village.

- The last time it was this dry: recent summers against 2,000 years of tree rings (https://mariuscomper.uk/last-time-this-dry/)

A drought atlas made from tree rings, from the year 0, set against instrument records for 1903–2025 and read with its own errors. Around Berlin, Warsaw, Prague, Budapest and Timișoara the recent four-summer run is the driest since at least 1500 in more than nine of ten simulations; around London, Paris and Madrid the instrument record already holds a drier one. For your town: the last time it was this dry. In English and Romanian.

Clima bunicilor uses annual NASA GISTEMP v4 anomalies on a 2° grid. Nopți tropicale counts daily minima of at least 20 °C in June–August, from E-OBS; 2026 is provisional. The drought atlas compares tree-ring estimates with instrumental measurements and shows uncertainty intervals. Read each project’s method and uncertainty.

Search and saving use JavaScript. Collections, county pages and project links remain readable without it.
