# What happens to your brain after a night without sleep?

After an all-nighter, the brain doesn't “switch off”. What changes first is its ability to stay steadily attentive: reactions grow unstable, attention lapses appear, and biological sleep pressure keeps rising. Follow what we know — and what we still don't — hour by hour.

## Myths going around — and what the evidence says

### What happens if you don't sleep for 24 hours?
Sustained attention measurably falls: more unstable reactions, more lapses. Performance on some tests reaches the level associated with 1.0‰ BAC — as a laboratory analogy, not alcohol in the blood. Driving becomes dangerous.

### Is it dangerous to miss one night of sleep?
For a healthy adult, one isolated night causes no organ injury — but it impairs attention, mood and safety (driving, machinery). If white nights repeat, talk to a doctor.

### How long can a human go without sleep?
There is no safe maximum. Documented cases: about 264 h (Gardner, 1964) and 453 h 40 min (McDonald, 1986). Guinness hasn't monitored the category since 1997, because of the danger.

### Can you die from lack of sleep?
No deaths are documented from simple voluntary sleep deprivation; the real danger comes from accidents. Fatal familial insomnia is a rare prion disease, not an extended all-nighter.

### What happens after 36 hours without sleep?
You enter historical-evidence territory: severe fatigue, irritability, concentration trouble and mild disorientation are common — with large individual variation.

### What happens after 48 hours without sleep?
Perceptual disturbances grow more common in long studies, yet there is no hour when they are guaranteed. Microsleeps make any precision activity risky.

### When do sleep-deprivation hallucinations appear?
In Waters' synthesis (21 studies), complex hallucinations appear mostly after about two days awake — but “mostly” doesn't mean “mandatory at 48 h”.

### Why do I sometimes feel awake again after an all-nighter?
The morning circadian alerting signal rises and can temporarily mask sleep pressure — with zero sleep. It is a postponement, not a recovery.

### Does coffee make up for lost sleep?
Partly and temporarily: it blocks adenosine receptors, so you perceive less sleepiness. It doesn't erase hours awake or restore rested performance.

### Can you repay lost sleep?
Partly. Acute sleepiness fades fast, other effects slower; it isn't hour-for-hour accounting. A regular schedule matters more than one marathon night.

### What is adenosine?
A breakdown product of neuronal metabolism, linked in wakefulness to rising sleep pressure; caffeine blocks its receptors without removing it.

### What is the glymphatic system?
A hypothesis: cerebrospinal-fluid transport along vessels may help clear some molecules from the brain. Mouse evidence is strong; translation to humans and sleep's exact role are still debated.

### Is it safe to drive after a sleepless night?
No. After 17 h awake, performance equals the 0.5‰ threshold, after 24 h the 1.0‰ one — and microsleeps can strike without warning. Don't trust the feeling that you're “holding up”.
