# The famine no monument names

Spring 1947: a ration of 250 grams of bread a day, about 660 calories out of
the 2,100 minimum — under a third of what keeps a person alive.

- The second drought year: 24 of 58 counties hit; wheat at 70–100 kg/ha near
  Iași; maize withered by July; rice from 4,200 to 20,000 lei per kilo.
- Requisitions and debts: 800,000 tons of wheat (1944); 2,390 tons to deficit
  counties against 26,665 to the USSR; 30,000 wagons owed back; a request for
  1,000,000 tons of American maize.
- The hunger trains: 10,000 people toward Oltenia, 200 wagons a day; train
  No. 1096 seized at Timișoara (29 November 1946); barrages at Filiași-Piatra;
  the free quota: 20 kg of maize flour and 3 kg of bread.
- Relief: CARS (31 August 1946) grows to 1,756 canteens, 148,888 rations a day,
  51,313 evacuated children; Sweden (20 wagons, 20,000 children), the US
  (50,000 people × 16 days = 800,000 portions ≈ 5.4 network days), Norway
  (5,000 tons of fish oil).
- The missing count: across the Prut 200,000–250,000 dead (10%); this side of
  the Prut, no verified total — undocumented.
