# The machine said no

A chip that cannot hold a world still has to offer one. Designers gave us four chasing rules instead of minds, a jungle grown from a byte, a city that arrives in pieces. The chips got bigger. We kept playing the cheap answers.

## The chip said no. Someone invented a cheaper yes. We still play it.

Pac-Man’s ghosts are four target tiles. You read them as four tempers. Fortnite’s storm is the same kind of answer on a thin wire: a hundred connections cannot all be simulated, so the island shrinks until everyone shares one last circle. [1]

## They offered the cheap answer. We still play it.

Console ads count what each year unlocked. The useful story is what still would not fit, and what a person built in its place. That second story is still running in the game you open tonight.

### The cheap answer has to feel dear

Blinky chases the tile you stand on. Pinky aims four tiles ahead. Inky doubles a line from Blinky through a point in front of you. Clyde turns for home inside eight tiles. Four bits of arithmetic. You meet a bully, an ambusher, a muddled partner, a coward. The board stored targets. [2]

### The trick walks out of the studio

A studio copies a fix when it still has the same bill to pay. The first game becomes a footnote. The method becomes how you build the next one. [16]

### New chips, new nos

Memory grew. Time, thumbs, batteries and a fair fight on a bad line became the scarce stuff. Short sessions and Tuesday seasons are today’s cheap answers. The chip said no. Design learned another verb. [15]

## Same bills. New tricks.

Pick a problem the chip will not stop asking. Each step is one game, one trick, and what studios still do with it.

### World: The place will not fit.

The cartridge is small. The disk fills up. The designer still has to give you somewhere to walk.

- **1982 · Pitfall!** — A cycling byte that starts at C4 grows 255 jungle screens as you walk. Studios still grow places from a formula.
- **1984 · Elite** — Six seed bytes make eight galaxies of 256 systems. Names and prices come from tables. A universe can be a seed.
- **1993 · Myst** — The world is photographed. The CPU cannot walk it in real time, so you click from still to still. A picture can stand in for a place.
- **2011 · Minecraft** — The world arrives in 16×16 chunks. Players write the kilometres the disk would not hold. Load the next piece. Let players finish the map.

### Picture: The eye wants more bodies than one line can carry.

A scanline holds a handful of moving figures. A 1992 PC cannot fill a true 3D room at speed. The picture still has to feel alive.

- **1985 · Super Mario Bros.** — The NES copies eight sprites to a line and drops the rest. Games rotate who survives, so the missing body flickers. Reuse a few moving figures across the frame.
- **1993 · Doom** — Walls are columns. BSP and visplanes decide what you see. You feel depth. The machine never built a full 3D room. Draw the cheaper picture that still feels deep.
- **1996 · Resident Evil** — Rooms are painted in advance. You turn on rails. Fear arrives as a tight camera, not as a free city. A still room can carry dread.
- **2002 · The Wind Waker** — Flat colour and simple faces keep a crowded sea drawable on a GameCube. Style can be a way to pay the drawing bill.

### Mind: Someone on screen has to seem to want something.

There is no room for a model of a person. There is room for a target, a clock, a bar, a recorded stranger.

- **1980 · Pac-Man** — Four ghosts, four targets, three modes. Personality falls out of the arithmetic. Give cheap enemies habits you can read.
- **1987 · La Abadía del Crimen** — Monks keep a day. You are late for vespers and the house notices. A clock can judge the player.
- **1998 · Half-Life** — A scientist runs when the test goes wrong. The lesson and the shock share one room. Write the behaviour into the space.
- **2012 · Journey** — A nameless cloak appears on your dune. No lobby. No voice. Another person used as weather. A trace can stand in for a crowd.

### Lesson: The first minutes have to teach the hands.

No pamphlet sits on the glass. Nobody in the living room will read one. The room has to teach.

- **1985 · Super Mario Bros. 1-1** — A safe stoop, a short pit, a mushroom that arrives as a surprise. You learn by landing. Put the lesson in the first screen.
- **2007 · Portal** — One gun. Rooms that are jokes about that gun. You laugh, and you have learned. Teach with one verb.
- **2005 · Shadow of the Colossus** — An empty map. Climbing taught on one huge body. Empty space can instruct.
- **now · Fortnite** — Highlighted buttons and a first match that holds your hand. Same 1985 problem, new living room. Teach in the first minute or lose the player.

### Wire: Share a world through a straw.

A cable carries a few bytes. A modem lies about time. A hundred players cannot all be simulated. You still want company.

- **1996 · Pokémon** — The link cable is the game. You cannot finish the creatures alone. Make trade the missing half of the adventure.
- **1996 · Quake** — The game guesses where you are until the server speaks. Smoothness is a polite lie about delay. Hide the lag so the fight still feels fair.
- **2017 · Fortnite** — A storm shrinks the island so a hundred connections share one last disk of ground. Shrink the stage when you cannot simulate the rest.
- **now · A live team of forty** — Weekly errands and a battle pass buy time. The scarce stuff is Tuesday labour. Use a calendar when you cannot finish a world.

### A world from a seed

Type four hex digits or roll new ones. A small generator plants a sky, glues a planet name from syllables, and numbers a strip of rooms. A thin seed looks empty. A fat one looks written by hand.

A teaching sketch. Elite used six bytes. Pitfall used an eight-bit cycle that starts at C4. This is neither program.

### Eight figures on one line

The pale block is you and keeps a slot. Add bodies. After eight, someone drops. Rotate who vanishes. That is how a crowd is faked on a poor line.

Plain blocks. The NES copies eight sprites to the current line from a pool of 64.

### 1978 · Space Invaders

Each alien is work the 8080 must copy into video memory.

Tomohiro Nishikado saw that every dead invader left the processor more time. The rest advanced faster. The march tightened. He kept the leftover. Difficulty arrived as leftover work. [5]

The last invaders feel personal. They are cheaper to copy.

Shooters still tighten as the board empties.

### 1980 · Pac-Man

Four enemies and no spare mind.

Blinky aims at your tile. Pinky aims four tiles ahead. Inky doubles a line from Blinky through a point in front of you. Clyde chases, then turns for his corner inside eight tiles. On a timer they each run home. [2]

### 1984 · Elite

A galaxy that will not sit in 32K of RAM.

David Braben and Ian Bell grew eight galaxies of 256 systems from six seed bytes. Names and prices come from tables. Acornsoft cut a much larger mathematical space to eight galaxies so the place would still feel written by hand. [4]

You jump to a planet that seems authored.

Store a function. Let the world appear when you travel.

### 1985 · Super Mario Bros.

A player who will not read a booklet, and eight sprites on a line.

World 1-1 puts a stoop, a goomba and a pit where your hands will meet them. The PPU copies eight sprites and drops the rest. Games rotate who vanishes each frame. [13]

The first screen taught you before you had a word for jump.

Put the lesson in the room. Reuse a few moving figures.

### 1987 · La Abadía del Crimen

The Name of the Rose, without a licence, on a 48K Spectrum.

Paco Menéndez and Juan Delcán built an abbey with a day, monks on routes you can watch, and rooms the CPU has to enact. Small in bytes. Large in rules. [10]

You are a novice late for vespers. The building has opinions.

A house can judge you on a small machine.

### 1993 · Doom

A room the PC cannot fill with true 3D at speed.

Walls are columns of texture. BSP and visplanes decide what you see and stitch the floors. WADs let strangers rebuild the offices. [9]

A corridor with depth. A game other people could continue.

Draw the cheaper picture. Let players rebuild the rooms.

### 1996 · Pokémon

A thin cable between two living rooms.

Game Freak made trade the unfinished half of the adventure. You cannot finish the creatures alone. [15]

Make the missing half of the game another person.

### 2012 · Journey

Company is expensive. Names and voice are noisier still.

Jenova Chen let a second cloak arrive on your dune. No name. No lobby. No chat. [14]

Someone is with you. You do not know who.

A nameless companion can be enough.

## Tricks studios still use.

The first game becomes a footnote. The method stays.

### Tiles and bitmaps

The NES draws a world from a short alphabet of squares. The Spectrum paints a bitmap and pays in clashing colours.

### Sprite multiplexing

Reuse a handful of moving figures. Flicker is the receipt.

### Bank switching

The cartridge lies about its size. That lie made Super Mario Bros. 3 possible.

### Seeds

Store a function. The map appears when you walk.

### Streaming and fog

Load the next piece while the player looks away. Fog is honest about the disk.

### A calendar

Seasons and shops keep a world larger than the team can finish.

## The expensive thing arrives. We keep the cheap one.

The machine can hold a city now. Designers still fetch it in pieces. It can draw a crowd. They still plant cardboard figures in the distance. It can connect a hundred people. They still hide most of them.

In Bucharest the ICE Felix HC carried the same 48K ceiling as a Spectrum. You still had to invent a monastery, a galaxy or a joke in a handful of kilobytes. The thumb, the battery and Tuesday evening are the new small rooms.

## Short answers.

### Are old games better?

No. Old limits forced tricks that new machines still use. Plenty of early games are clumsy. Keep the method.

### Did Super Mario Bros. invent the silent lesson?

It is the example everyone remembers. Iwata Asks supports the claim that 1-1 is arranged as teaching. Arcade cabinets were already teaching with short lives. Mario brought the lesson home.

### Was Doom the first 3D game?

No. It is a cheap picture that feels deep: columns of wall, not a full 3D room. Earlier experiments exist. This page cares about the picture people copied.

### Are the toys copies of the old programs?

No. They teach the feeling of a seed and of eight figures on a line. They copy nobody’s pixels.
