## Five questions with verified answers

### Do the trovants really grow?

**Verdict: They do not grow like living things**

The Costești trovants are sandstone concretions formed about 6 million years ago, as groundwater cemented the sands with calcium carbonate; the blocks reach over 4 metres. The impression that they appear after rain comes from erosion: water washes the sand away and uncovers the blocks, just as wind and rain excavated the shapes at Ulmet.

### Is Lake Ursu heated by a thermal spring?

**Verdict: No; the sun heats it**

The deep water reaches 35–40°C through a solar greenhouse effect: the thin layer of fresh water at the surface never mixes with the dense salt water below and traps the sun's heat. That is why bathing is allowed only at certain hours of the day, so the layers are not stirred.

### Do the mud volcanoes erupt lava?

**Verdict: No; the cones are cold**

The Berca cones are cold: natural gas rising from 3,000 metres down carries mud to the surface, where the air dries it into cones up to 6 metres tall. The 30 hectares stay bare of vegetation, furrowed by erosion gullies.

### Does the air in the Pucioasa cave kill instantly?

**Verdict: Only below the marked line**

The cave breathes out about 3,000 m³ of CO₂ and hydrogen sulphide a day; the gas, heavier than air, settles on the cave floor, and the yellow sulphur crystals mark the lethal level, the 'line of death'. The danger is real only below the line marked on the walls, which visitors must strictly respect.

### Is the Hoia-Baciu forest haunted?

**Verdict: Disputed: the observations are real, the explanations are not**

The oaks bend at the trunk with no clear forestry explanation, and in the Round Glade trees refuse to grow. In 1968 unusual light phenomena were photographed above the glade. Beyond these recorded observations, the forest remains a subject for documentaries, not for conclusions.
