# How Many Relatives Separate You From Genghis Khan?

A tool for intuition, not a genetic test: pick where your grandparents or great-grandparents came from, and the page shows, from real historical corridors, a distribution of the generations where a shared ancestor with Genghis Khan could plausibly sit.

## The arithmetic

Your ancestor count doubles every generation: 2 parents, 4 grandparents, 8 great-grandparents... By generation 30 you have, in theory, over a billion ancestor slots — more than the people on Earth in 1200 CE (estimated at 360–450 million, per the US Census Bureau's compilation). The slots must overlap: it's "pedigree collapse" (Kenneth Wachter, 1980). Against a real community of a few thousand people, the collapse happens much sooner, around generation 12–15. Joseph Chang (1999) computed Europe's "identical ancestors point" around the year 800 — Charlemagne's era — roughly 40 generations back; Genghis Khan sits at almost the same distance, about 28 generations, at a 29-year generation interval (Fenner, 2005).

## What is actually known

A 2003 study (Zerjal et al., *American Journal of Human Genetics*) found a Y-chromosome pattern — a "star cluster" — in about 8% of men across a huge region of Asia, roughly 16 million men, 0.5% of the world population at the time. But a 2017 study of ancient DNA from high-status Mongol graves (1130–1250) found haplogroup R1b, not the cluster's haplogroup C; and Wei et al. (2018), resequencing over 18,000 Y chromosomes, moved the pattern's age to roughly 2,500 years — 1,500 years before Genghis Khan. Conclusion: the pattern belongs to Mongolic peoples broadly, not necessarily to one man's personal descendants.

## The tool

Choose 2–8 geographic origins (grandparents or great-grandparents). Each is placed into one of nine historical tiers of contact with the Mongol Empire's core population — from Mongolia itself, to directly conquered Central Asia, to the Golden Horde and Ilkhanate, to Europe's steppe margin (including Moldavia, Dobrogea and Budjak), down to regions with no documented historical corridor at all. ## The Romanian corridor

Moldavia sat under Golden Horde control for over a century after the 1241 invasion, until the independent state was founded in 1359. Dobrogea and Budjak had a Tatar presence for centuries, under the Crimean Khanate (1441–1783), ruled by the Giray dynasty — documented descendants of Genghis Khan; Romania's 2021 census still counts 18,156 Tatars. Transylvania and Wallachia's interior saw only the 1241 wave, with no lasting settlement afterward.

## Why it matters anyway

Without a proven genetic marker, the chance of a real genealogical link to Genghis Khan's descendants remains close to mathematical certainty for anyone descended from a population sufficiently connected to the Mongol steppe over the last eight centuries — it's only the distance along the thread that varies enormously from one region to another.
