# The carpet you can read

Peasant carpets are texts: loaf-rhombi, wolf teeth, trees of life. Eight motifs, three regions, five plant colours — and a loom you can weave on yourself.

## 01 · Three motions, for thousands of years

Every scoarță is born from three motions: the shed (the warp opens), the pick (the weft passes) and the beat. The rest is patience.

The warp is the threads stretched on the loom; the weft is the thread that passes between them, carried by the shuttle. The chenar is the frame, the câmp the story inside. The vertical loom — hanging threads, tensioned below with clay weights — is attested since ancient times, and such weights were found in many settlements in Mehedinți.

Below, one row weaves itself, so you can see the shed: the warp parts, the shuttle passes, the beater falls. Then the motifs — eight of them, each with its name, region and attributed meaning.

## 02 · The alphabet on the wall

Each motif weaves itself as you reach it. Read the label carefully: some meanings are documented, others are “so it is said” — and one sign can have two names.

The loaf-rhombi and wolf teeth are weavers' names recorded in museum studies; the tree of life comes with an old scholarly reading. But ask three villages what the ram's horns mean and you get four answers. The “documented” / “attributed” tag under each motif says exactly how sure we are.

## 03 · Each region weaves differently

Geometric Oltenia, red-and-black Maramureș, warm exuberant Bessarabia. Three bands woven in their palettes — press a region to see it alone.

The palettes below are reconstructions after museum pieces: red-black-white in Oltenia and Maramureș, bright oranges and yellows with a black chenar in Bessarabia. There is no fixed recipe — take them as starting points; in the studio you can change them.

## 04 · Five plants, three salts, fifteen wools

Pick a plant and a salt. Alum brightens, iron darkens, and without a mordant most colours wash out. Indigo is the exception: a vat dye that ignores the mordant.

Dyeing began with skeins washed free of grease and with the decoction: plants boiled in water — often rainwater — for hours, until the colour came out. Then the wool went into the vat, mordanted or not. The matrix below is simplified, but every cell follows documented recipes.

## 05 · The wool road

Shearing, washing, carding, spinning, skeins, mordanting, dyeing, warping, weaving. Nine steps, nine woven rows — one lit per step.

Nothing was wasted: good wool went into warp and weft, short staples into felt. Dyeing came late, after spinning and skeining — first the thread had to exist. Press the steps in turn and watch the piece grow.

## 06 · Weave your piece

Pick the border, the field motif and the palette — or the colour you dyed above. The loom weaves the piece, and you can download it at the end.

These pieces are play, not facsimiles: the motifs are geometric reconstructions, the colours screen approximations of plant dyes. But the grammar is real: border, field, repetition.

## Why it reads

A carpet is a text that doesn't lie about itself: it says who wove it, from which region, with which dyes. The meanings are slipperier — some documented, some passed mouth to mouth. This page kept them apart.
