Saxon Transylvania, village by village
UNESCO inscribed seven villages. The Lutheran Church administers 164 fortified churches, of which about 40 have opening hours, about 40 are closed for decay, and the rest open after a phone call. The map below has all 162 in the Fortified Churches Foundation's inventory, with who answers the phone, the monument class and the documented damage.
A million visitors in 2025, 60% of them Romanian. The most visited village churches were Biertan, Valea Viilor, Cisnădioara, Cârța and Cristian; Viscri is missing from the administrator's top five, which counts entries through its own parishes, not through the Mihai Eminescu Trust, the contact for visiting Viscri.
Each dot leads to its row in the list. Filters add up: UNESCO and class A overlap almost entirely, and Moșna is both class A and damaged.
Positions from the Foundation's inventory, good for orientation, not navigation. Class A / B is from the 2015 List of Historic Monuments; 10 churches have no code identified in the List. „Documented damage” means a dated event in a named source: a collapse, a closure or a Foundation emergency intervention. No source says which churches make up the 25% with problems, so the filter shows what has been written, not everything at risk.
The property is called „Villages with Fortified Churches in Transylvania”, covers 553 hectares and meets one criterion, the fourth: an outstanding example of a cultural landscape. Six villages are Saxon. The seventh, Dârjiu, is Székely and Unitarian.
Inscribed first, in 1993, and alone for six years. Three rings of wall climb the hill in the middle of the village; the hall church of 1490–1522 was the seat of the Saxon Lutheran bishops from 1572 to 1867. The most visited rural fortified church in 2025.

On the main road between Sighișoara and Brașov, so the easiest to reach. The Gothic hall church (1493–1525) carries a fighting gallery on corbels along the whole chancel; the bell tower of 1677 copies Sighișoara's Clock Tower. The peasant citadel is a separate site on the hill above.

The best known, not the most visited: it is not in the 2025 top five. The church stands on the foundations of a Székely Romanesque basilica and was fortified in 1500; the 7 m wall gained towers and defensive houses in the 17th century. The village, with its blue houses, entered UNESCO together with the church.

Fundația Mihai Eminescu Trust
The strongest fortification in the whole landscape: a 12 m wall with 272 storerooms on four levels, 15 km from Brașov. The Greek-cross church was begun by the Teutonic Knights around 1218 and finished by Cistercians. The only one with online tickets and hours published on its own site.

Not a fortified church but a nobleman's castle: the residential tower of the counts of Câlnic, from 1270, bought by the Saxon villagers in 1430 and walled in; the chapel in the middle of the enclosure is small. The village's Lutheran church stands separately. Restored with EU funds in 2018–2023 to remove an „accentuated risk of collapse”.

The only one of the seven that is not Saxon: a Székely village with a Unitarian church, in Harghita county. The 1419 frescoes of the legend of King Ladislaus are the reason for the inscription; the storerooms in the wall still hold the villagers' bacon, hence the nickname „the bacon fortress”.

From Mălâncrav's Gothic murals to the Saxon chests in Brădeni's attic, these twenty-two places show how different the churches beyond the UNESCO route can be. Cisnădioara, Cârța and Cristian appear in the rural ranking reported for 2025; the others are editorial choices.

Richiș preserves a towerless Gothic basilica with two side choirs, stone rib vaults and polygonal endings. An inscription dated 1451 marks the completion of its main building phase. The south portal, from around 1405, and the west portal, with a carved Crucifixion tympanum, introduce the richness of the decoration. Fragments of fresco survive in the choir, beside a Gothic sacrament niche where a pelican represents sacrifice. The sacristy door, marked 1516, has inlay and an elaborate locking mechanism. Of the enclosure built around 1500, a stretch of wall and the gate tower, now used as a bell tower, remain.

2025 rural top five
Cisnădioara climbs St Michael's Hill towards a three-aisled Romanesque basilica, probably built before 1223. Its west portal, with four successive recesses and carved stonework, is the distinguishing detail. The fortification dates from the 13th century; fragments of the curtain wall and defensive towers remain. Inside is a memorial to soldiers who died in the First World War. The monument register dates the church to 1176–1223. In 2025, Cisnădioara was among the five rural churches with the most visits reported by the administrator.

2025 rural top five
Cârța is the exception that explains the limits of the inventory: a former Cistercian abbey, rather than a fortified church. Founded around 1202, it is regarded as the order's easternmost settlement. The church remained exposed to attack; after a 15th-century fire and the abbey's dissolution in 1474, the complex came under Sibiu's protection. The walls still reveal the plan of a three-aisled basilica with a transept, while the monastery retains the eastern wall of its cloister. The choir and transept are used by the Lutheran community. Cârța was also among the five rural destinations reported as most visited in 2025.

2025 rural top five
In Sibiu County's Cristian, the fortified Lutheran church stands on a hill beside the Cibin. Romania's National Archaeological Record dates the three-aisled basilica and west tower to 1270; in the first half of the 16th century, a village fortress with two enclosures and towers grew around it. The polygonal chancel and side chapels were added in the 14th century, while a Baroque altar from 1729 survives inside. After plague reduced the population, Protestant Landlers were forcibly resettled here from Catholic Vienna beginning in 1756. Cristian completes the group of five rural churches with the most visits reported in 2025.

Mălâncrav preserves a three-aisled Romanesque basilica with a west tower and polygonal chancel, built in the 14th century. Its Gothic mural cycle follows the story of salvation from Genesis to the Passion and still covers much of the interior. A winged altarpiece places the Virgin Mary at its centre, while the late-Gothic choir stalls came from Johann Reychmut's workshop. From the 15th–16th-century defences, the level above the tower and ruins of the enclosure remain; defensive levels over the nave and chancel were removed after a 19th-century fire.

At Alma Vii, the defensive purpose remains legible in the masonry. A small hall church built at the beginning of the 14th century gained a defensive level above its chancel two centuries later, with machicolations and firing slits. By the end of the 16th century, a polygonal enclosure with four towers surrounded the complex. The five-level gate tower retains defensive features on three levels and a parapet walk at the top. The bell tower's first level was habitable and had a hearth. Church, enclosure and all four towers remain on the hill crest.

At Hosman, fragments of a 13th-century Romanesque basilica remain: the west portal, columns and arcades that once separated the main nave from the aisles. A two-figure relief above the portal has been read either as Christ's Baptism or as Adam and Eve. In the 15th century the church was surrounded by two enclosures with towers and bastions. The gate tower retains its wooden portcullis and the date 1502, while traces of the wall walk and firing slits survive in the enclosure.

At Cincșor, the church stands in the village centre near the Olt. A chapel from the second half of the 13th century formed the basis of the church completed in 1421. During the 15th and 16th centuries it gained four towers, an enclosure wall, outer moat, buttresses and wall walks along the chancel and bell tower. The village was burned in 1599 and began to prosper after a bridge crossed the Olt in 1850. The former school and parish house now host exhibitions, guest rooms and cultural events.

At Cincu, the hill between the Olt and Hârtibaciu shaped the defences: three steep sides concentrated fortification on the west. The Romanesque basilica was built in the mid-13th century, while the parish dates its fortification to 1522–1526. The western tower was strengthened and raised in several stages. Fragments of two circular enclosures remain, together with the old town hall and a defensive grain store. Inside, late-Gothic pews stand beside a Renaissance pulpit, Baroque guild furnishings and a Classical organ.

At Criț, a round-stone lane climbs to the church built after its medieval predecessor collapsed. The present 1810–1813 building is a Neoclassical hall church with a western bell tower. Around it survive the 16th-century oval enclosure and four towers; a fifth collapsed in 1925. Inside the fortification stands a well with a wheel dated 1753, while the ruins of the former Saxon school remain to the south. The site makes two periods easy to read: a 19th-century church inside a Renaissance defensive enclosure.

Moșna shows how much a Saxon community could invest in a church. The west portal of its 14th-century predecessor was retained in the hall church built around 1485 and associated with master mason Andreas Lapicida. The chancel has a defensive level, the side entrances are strengthened with towers, and an arched wall walk survives in the enclosure. Inside are a Gothic lierne vault, a carved sacristy portal and a stone sacrament tabernacle nearly ten metres high. Part of the northern wall collapsed on 13 June 2026, so access must be confirmed before travelling.

Axente Sever shows the practical role of a fortified church between attacks: it stored the village's provisions. The hall church and massive 14th-century tower between nave and chancel gained defensive levels, loopholes and a wall walk. Slots for the portcullis remain visible at the west portal. Along the enclosure, each family had a room for grain, meat and other food; bacon was kept in a separate tower and marked for identification. The restored storerooms now house a museum and guest rooms.

Hărman shows how a community functioned during a siege: provisions and living quarters were kept behind 12-metre walls. The Romanesque basilica gained its west tower in 1290, while the fortification grew to two enclosures, seven towers and a water-filled moat, filled in during 1814. The eastern tower chapel preserves pre-Reformation frescoes of the Last Judgement and the Punishment of Sinners. In January 1612 the fortress withstood a siege without being taken.

At Copșa Mare, the church appears to follow the hill on which it stands. The 14th-century Gothic building was fortified around 1510: the chancel was raised with a defensive level, the tower gained a wall walk, and firing openings were cut above the nave. The chancel retains its Gothic star vault and two-level sacristy dated 1519. The nave was remodelled in Baroque style in 1795, while the present altar dates from 1854.

At Șeica Mică, the defences were organised around the well. The Gothic basilica begun in the second half of the 14th century is recorded in 1414 under the dedication of Saint Catherine. The church tower and western gate tower were joined by 14-metre walls to form the fountain court. The inner enclosure retains its gate tower and a bastion, while a second enclosure was added in the mid-16th century. The chancel preserves its Gothic rib vault.

At Cloașterf, church and fortification were designed together. The 1521–1524 building has a defensive level with machicolations between the buttresses, while the polygonal enclosure is strengthened at every corner. Inside, the 18th-century painted gallery carries floral motifs and images of other fortified churches. The organ was installed in 1832 on the structure of the 1716 altar; behind it survives the inscription '1524', marking completion.

At Bunești, defence changed the shape of the church. The three-aisled basilica built in the late 13th century was narrowed around 1500: its side aisles were demolished and defensive levels were added above the nave, tower and chancel. The enclosure retains four towers and supply rooms. Inside, the two-level north gallery, painted between 1680 and 1775 by the Rössler family, contrasts with the defensive walls. The present Gothic Revival bell tower dates from 1847.

At Meșendorf, the loss of the vaults exposes the history of the defences. The 14th-century Gothic hall church gained timber defensive levels above its tower, nave and chancel in 1495. The vaults were removed in the early 19th century because they risked collapse, but the medieval tower and two enclosure towers remain. Inside are a timber gallery with Baroque paintings, a winged altarpiece from 1693 and an organ from 1914. The tower roof received preventive repairs in 2023.

At Apold, the fortification preserves the church and buildings where the village stored its supplies. The 13th-century Romanesque basilica was rebuilt as a Late Gothic hall church in the 15th century. Between 1504 and 1507, the chancel, nave and tower were raised for defence and the complex gained two enclosures. The outer wall, three towers, a supply building and the foundations of the inner enclosure survive. Inside remain the 1821 organ altar and Gothic frescoes of the wise and foolish virgins.

At Dealu Frumos, the building phases can be read in the walls. The three-aisled Romanesque basilica, built in the first half of the 13th century, was transformed in the early 16th century into a Gothic hall church with two defensive towers and an enclosure with four corner towers. The date 1522 above the north-east entrance probably marks completion. A crucifix dated 1425 survives above the triumphal arch. The courtyard was enlarged for people, animals and supplies.

Stejărișu is the church of a village moved after floods. Beginning in the 14th century, the community built its new church on higher ground, with two enclosures, defensive towers and a timber-framed defence level above the nave. The inner enclosure was dismantled in the 19th century and its stone reused to enlarge the church. The detached tower and Bacon Tower retain the logic of the old fortress; smoked bacon is still stored in the latter.

At Brădeni, floods changed the level of the church while the attic became the village storehouse. The nave floor was raised by about two metres, and hundreds of Saxon chests for clothing and food survive in the attic, some painted with fantastic figures. The stone-and-timber defensive level, parapet walk and three surviving towers show how the building served as both shelter and storehouse. A well also survives inside the church.

The Foundation lost two towers in five days in February 2016 and 18 metres of wall in June 2026. The list below holds only dated, sourced events: 6 collapses, closures or abandonments from the press and 10 churches where the Foundation made dated emergency interventions. A quarter of the 164, about 40, have structural problems according to its director, Cristian Cismaru; which ones has not been published.
The rule, per the administrator: about 40 churches have hours and a ticket, about 40 are closed, and for the rest you phone the „local person in charge”, whose number is usually posted on the church gate. The numbers below are those the Fortified Churches Foundation publishes on each church's page, read on 14 September 2026; many pages date from 2016, so a dead number is possible. Where a district consistory or a town parish answers, that is also where you learn who has the key in the village.
Prejmer, Dârjiu and Cisnădioara publish hours on official sites. For the other churches, the row says „on request” and gives the contact where one is available. Admission averages 10–20 lei.

The list is the public inventory of the Fortified Churches Foundation (161 pages with coordinates and contact), plus Dârjiu, the non-Saxon UNESCO component. The Foundation's director speaks of 164; the difference of three is not explained anywhere.
The monument class comes from the 2015 List of Historic Monuments (LMI), matched by village name and distance from the Foundation's point. 39 of the matched entries do not carry the word „fortified” in the List, among them the town churches of Sibiu, Brașov and Sighișoara; they stay on the map because the Foundation administers them as fortified churches. 10 churches have no identified code.
„Documented damage” covers only dated, sourced events. The absence of the label does not mean the church is safe.
