A 1 kWp reference system yields 1,220.3 kWh a year on average. Find your commune and see its sun on the 3D relief map, month by month. Height is the chosen month, colour is the year.
Every column is a commune: its height is the chosen month's energy, computed by the European PVGIS service for a 1 kWp reference system. Scroll and the year passes over the relief — columns rise toward summer and sink toward winter.
The colour never changes: it tells what the commune yields in a whole year, from ochre under 1,200 kWh to pale yellow over 1,250 kWh.
July
Output peaks in July and reaches its low in December
In July, an ordinary month brings 145.1 kWh — about 3.1 times as much as in December (47 kWh). The map now shows the peak month; drag the slider back toward winter and watch the country lie down.
Constanța
Constanța catches the most sun
Constanța county averages 1,304.4 kWh a year, the highest in the country; at the other end, Maramureș gathers 1,124.1 kWh. The sunniest commune in Constanța is Săcele, at 1,344.5 kWh a year.
The national record sits at Sfântu Gheorghe, in Tulcea: 1,354.6 kWh a year.
What is measured
What the columns show
Height follows a linear scale: a month with twice the energy makes a column twice as tall, though map perspective can change its apparent height on screen. The figures are 2005–2020 climate means, not this year's weather and not a forecast.
The reference system is identical everywhere — 1 kWp, crystalline silicon, optimal tilt — so the differences between columns are differences of sun, not of hardware. What the map cannot know, below.
Put your place on the map
Open the map, search a commune, town or county and pick the month at the bottom. On the map, the chosen month moves every column; click a column to see the annual mean, the chosen month and the optimal tilt. For each place, the panel draws the twelve-month curve and compares the annual mean against the country's.
How much sun, month by month?
The peak is in July: 145.1 kWh. The low is in December: 47 kWh. The whole year adds up to 1,220.3 kWh on average for the 1 kWp reference system.
The means are climatological, over 2005–2020: in an ordinary commune, annual output varies from year to year by about ±55.1 kWh (±4.5%).
By county
Each county's annual mean — the arithmetic mean of its communes, each commune counting once regardless of area — and its sunniest commune. Ordered by mean, from Constanța down. First to last county differ by 180.3 kWh a year.

What the map cannot know
Your roof
Every commune is a single point, at its centre: terrain shading is in the calculation, but the shade of houses and trees is not. Your panel sits on a roof, not on the commune's centroid.
This year
The figures average the years 2005–2020. Yield differs from year to year with the weather, typically by about ±55.1 kWh around the mean; the means do not say what this year yields.
Tilt and orientation
The calculations assume optimal tilt (around 36°) and the optimal orientation computed for each commune. A roof tilted differently or facing east or west catches less.
What it does not tell you
The page sizes no installations, counts no money and recommends no panels. It is a climate atlas, not installation advice.
The column scale
Height is linear: a month with twice the energy makes a column twice as tall; map perspective can change its apparent height on screen. Colour shows the annual mean, in three bands.
Boundaries
Commune borders are simplified to about 30 metres. The sun is computed at the commune's centre, not at every house.
How we computed it and where the data come from
The sun. We queried the EU Joint Research Centre's PVGIS calculator (version 5.2) at the centre of each of the 3181 communes: the same reference system everywhere — 1 kWp, crystalline silicon, free-standing, 14% system losses, optimal slope and azimuth. The radiation base is PVGIS-SARAH2 with ERA5 meteorology, over 2005–2020; terrain shadows are included. Accessed 30 September 2026.
Fitting the map. Every commune takes the value at its central point; the counties in tables and panels are arithmetic means of their communes, and the national mean averages all 3181 communes. The page shows commune names from the geo-spatial.org LAU registry.
The columns. Every commune has a column at its centre. Height is the chosen month's energy, on a linear scale. Colour shows the annual mean: under 1,200 kWh, between 1,200 and 1,250 kWh, over 1,250 kWh — display breaks (the distribution's tertiles, rounded to 50 kWh), not natural classes.
The relief. Copernicus GLO-30 (European Space Agency), 30-metre resolution, downsampled to about 900 metres on the page. Vertical exaggeration varies with camera distance.
How much electricity does the sun give in my commune?
On average over 2005–2020, a 1 kWp reference system at optimal tilt and orientation yields 1,220.3 kWh a year in Romania — most in Constanța (1,304.4 kWh), least in Maramureș (1,124.1 kWh). Search your commune on the map for its own figure.
Which month gives the most?
July: 145.1 kWh in an ordinary year, about 3.1 times as much as in December (47 kWh). Drag the month slider and watch the country breathe.
Can I size my panels from this page?
No. This is a climate atlas, not installation advice: one reference system, one point per commune, optimal tilt assumed, no roof, building-shadow or tree-shadow data (terrain shading is included). The limits are explained in “What the map cannot know”.
