Why the answers disagree

Three rules, three answers. One registry.

The question hides three questions: how many letters a name has, how many characters it has in total, and which single-word name is longest. Each rule has its own winner — and all three check out below, letter by letter.

Rule 1 — Letters, no spaces

Stațiunea Climaterică Sâmbăta — 27 letters

Stațiunea Climaterică Sâmbăta has 27 letters, not 26. The diacritics — ă, â, ț — count once each. Under the same rule, the absolute record is Agigea, at 30.

Rule 2 — Characters, spaces included

Agigea · 33Sâmbăta · 29Vităneștii de sub Măgură · 24

Spaces counted, Agigea runs to 33 characters and Sâmbăta to 29. The order shifts in places too: Vităneștii de sub Măgură, at 24 characters, moves ahead of the two Constantin villages, at 22 each.

Rule 3 — One word only

Streisângeorgiu — 15 letters

Streisângeorgiu, Hunedoara: 15 letters, the longest single-word name. Five 14-letter names come next.

Method

How we counted

The source is the National Institute of Statistics SIRUTA nomenclature, H1 2026: 13,755 level-3 localities — villages, component localities and the six sectors of Bucharest. Every length is recomputed from the official DENLOC field; the H1 2025 edition contains exactly the same codes with a single rename (Bâlvăneștii de Jos became Băsești), so the ranking does not depend on the edition.

A letter is any alphabetic character, including ă, â, î, ș, ț. Spaces, hyphens, digits and dots do not count as letters. Characters are counted in the official name as published, spaces included. One word means no spaces, no hyphens and no dots.

The registry writes names in capitals; the page shows them as normally written, with the correct ș and ț diacritics. Lengths always follow the official form, spelling quirks included.

No name has 22, 24, 25, 26, 28 or 29 letters — the distribution jumps from 21 to 23, to 27 and to 30.

Evergreen content: rechecked against each SIRUTA edition. Last checked: September 2026.
