Method
How we counted
The source is the National Institute of Statistics SIRUTA nomenclature, H1 2026: 13,755 level-3 localities — villages, component localities and the six sectors of Bucharest. Every length is recomputed from the official DENLOC field; the H1 2025 edition contains exactly the same codes with a single rename (Bâlvăneștii de Jos became Băsești), so the ranking does not depend on the edition.
A letter is any alphabetic character, including ă, â, î, ș, ț. Spaces, hyphens, digits and dots do not count as letters. Characters are counted in the official name as published, spaces included. One word means no spaces, no hyphens and no dots.
The registry writes names in capitals; the page shows them as normally written, with the correct ș and ț diacritics. Lengths always follow the official form, spelling quirks included.
No name has 22, 24, 25, 26, 28 or 29 letters — the distribution jumps from 21 to 23, to 27 and to 30.
