Neurobiological Basis
Why do right angles degrade on obliques?
The human primary visual cortex (V1) contains a higher density of orientation-selective neurons tuned to horizontal and vertical meridians. Documented in neurobiology as the oblique effect (Appelle, 1972), this neural anisotropy causes angular discrimination accuracy to drop substantially when references tilt along 45-degree diagonals.
Precision toolmaker's squares conforming to DIN 875/0 maintain perpendicularity tolerances tighter than 4 micrometres. While invisible without optical instruments, unaided human vision detects the daylight gap as soon as misalignment exceeds a few tenths of a degree.
