Romania’s rail timetable, 2014–2026

Romania’s stations without trains: how many trains stop at every station, 2014–2026

Romania’s 2026 timetable has almost as many passenger trains as in 2014: 1,804 on a Wednesday in March against 1,728, and 1,540 on a Saturday against 1,543. They stop at 95 fewer stations and halts, and 182 have no train at all, on any day. Look up a station to see how many trains stopped there each year and where the nearest station with trains is.

Pick a station on the map or search for it. The map starts in 2014 and runs through every year to 2026.

The number of trains has stayed almost the same; the number of places they stop has fallen. On an ordinary Wednesday in 2014 passenger trains stopped at 1,759 stations and halts; in 2026, at 1,664. A Wednesday has 4.4% more trains, a Saturday three fewer (1,543 then, 1,540 now), and a Wednesday in July 1,843 against 1,673. The number of stations with stops falls on all three days.

All operators. The 2026 stations include the six stops on Timișoara–Jimbolia (one, Checea Sat, did not exist in 2014), whose trains are missing from the public file; their trains are not added to the 2026 total.

Trains have gathered at the big stations. The 50 busiest stations had 13.4% of all stops in 2014 and 17.4% in 2026. Of the 1,576 stations with trains in both years, 853 now have fewer, 493 more and 230 the same; 198 have half as many or fewer. Stations with at most two trains a day rose from 16 to 42.

#92 towns and communes have no station with trains left

In 2014 at least one passenger train stopped in 1,022 of Romania’s communes and towns. In 92 of them no train stops in 2026, at any station inside their boundaries: 17 towns and 75 rural communes, home to 454,457 people (2021 census).

The largest is Hunedoara, a city of more than 50,000, without trains since 2018. The distance runs from the town’s main station to the nearest station that still has trains, as the crow flies.

#Why they lost their trains

On 1,090 km of track that had passenger trains in 2014, the 2025–26 timetable has none. The count leaves out rebuilt lines and Timișoara–Jimbolia, whose trains are missing only from the data.

Most stations (94) are on lines that an operator, private or state-owned, walked away from: Regiotrans after losing its safety certificate in March 2015, the state operator CFR Călători in 2018 on Simeria–Hunedoara, Șibot–Cugir and Alexandria–Zimnicea, Interregional in 2020 on the lines around Holod. For 58 stations no published explanation was found; the page says so for each one.

#How the count was made

The source is the timetable that Informatica Feroviară, the state rail IT company, publishes on data.gov.ro for each operator: CFR Călători (state-owned), Regio Călători (formerly Regiotrans), Transferoviar, Interregional, Softrans, Astra Trans Carpatic and Ferotrafic. There are 13 editions, from 2013–14 to 2025–26; each runs from mid-December to mid-December.

For each year the second Wednesday of March was taken (12 March 2014 … 11 March 2026) and every passenger train with a scheduled stop at each station was counted. The conclusion was checked on a Saturday in March and a Wednesday in July before it was written.

A “halt” (haltă, h., hc., Hm. in station names) is a small unstaffed or lightly staffed stop. Codes that are the same station (the two groups of Bucharest North, the three codes in Cugir) are counted once. Junctions, switch posts and signals are not stations and are left out.

“No train at all” means at least one stop on a Wednesday in 2014 and no stop on any day of the week in the 2025–26 timetable.

The timetable is the planned one, published in December: it misses changes during the year and cancelled trains. Two gaps are known: the 2013–14 file lacks the Titu–Târgoviște–Pietroșița line (present from 2014–15), and the 2025–26 file lacks the Regio trains Timișoara–Jimbolia. That line’s stations are counted as served in 2026 and never as lost; its 12 trains are not added to the 2026 train total.

Station positions come from OpenStreetMap by station code, the rest by name and by track distance between neighbouring stations. The distance to the nearest station with trains is a straight line. Reasons come from the press and operator notices; where nothing was found, the page says so.
