London was never planned as one city. It grew out of a Roman port, a royal abbey and hundreds of Saxon farms, fords and clearings, and in 1965 an Act of Parliament joined them up. This is a trip through all thirty-three pieces: who named them, who built them, and the odd stories they still keep.
