Why is it called Aldgate East?

Where the name comes from
Named after Aldgate, although it stands on Whitechapel High Street in Whitechapel; the name "Commercial Road" was considered during planning. The origin of Aldgate is uncertain; John Stow, in the 16th century, derived it from "Old Gate".
Worth knowing: In 2006 a Tower Hamlets councillor campaigned to rename the station "Brick Lane" by 2012, without success.
