Where the name comes from

Named after the Blackfriars Priory; "black" refers to the black cappa worn by Dominican friars, and "friar" comes from the Latin frater, "brother". The name is recorded from 1317. The main-line station, opened as St. Paul's, was renamed Blackfriars in 1937.
