Where the name comes from
According to Reaney's Place-Names of Essex, "Cicca's well", Cicca being an Anglo-Saxon personal name. A folk etymology links it to a lost "king's well", and Nathaniel Salmon derived "-well" from Anglo-Saxon weald, wood.
