Named after the old manor of Debden, recorded in Domesday Book in 1086 as Deppendana, from Old English dep, 'deep', and den, 'valley'.
Worth knowing: It opened in 1865 as Chigwell Road, became Chigwell Lane that December, and was renamed Debden only when the Central line took it over.
