Where the name comes from
Named after the town of Hanwell, recorded as Hanewelle in 959. The name probably means 'spring or stream frequented by cocks', though its origin is uncertain; another suggestion links 'Han' to a boundary stone near Hanwell spring.
Worth knowing: From 1896 to 1974 the station was called Hanwell and Elthorne, and some old nameboards with that name are still on the platforms.
