Where the name comes from
Highbury takes its name from a manor house built in 1271 on a hill, called Highbury to distinguish it from an earlier, decayed manor. Islington means "Gīsla's hill", from the Old English personal name Gīsla and dun (hill). The station opened as Highbury and was renamed Highbury & Islington in 1872.
