Where the name comes from
Named after the town of Leigh-on-Sea in Essex. From at least Saxon times a hilltop clearing in the woods of the area was known as Leigh (Lee in Anglo-Saxon). The station opened as Leigh in 1855 and was renamed Leigh-on-Sea in 1904.
Worth knowing: The original station was built in Leigh Old Town and split the market place in two.
