Where the name comes from

Named after New Cross Gate, the western part of New Cross, which takes its name from the New Cross tollgate set up in 1718 by the New Cross Turnpike Trust. Two companies had stations called New Cross, so after both passed to the Southern Railway the older one was renamed New Cross Gate in 1923.

Worth knowing: In 1847 it was the northern terminus of the atmospheric propulsion system, abandoned within months.
