Where the name comes from
Named after Southend-on-Sea, which began as a few fishermen's huts and a farm at the southern end of the village of Prittlewell; a 1408 will calls the area south of Prittlewell Sowthende. The station was called Southend, then Southend-on-Sea (Central) from 1946 and Southend Central from 1969.
Worth knowing: The line was meant to end opposite the pier, but residents of The Royal Terrace objected, so the station was built further inland.
