Why is it called Southwark?

Jubilee

Where the name comes from

Named after the borough. Southwark means "southern defensive work", from Old English sūþ (south) and weorc (work); the 10th-century Burghal Hidage records it as Suthriganaweorc, "fort of the men of Surrey".

Worth knowing: The station was not in the original Jubilee line extension plan and was added after lobbying by the local council and MP Simon Hughes.
