Both parts of the name come from the church of St Mary Matfelon. Whitechapel itself is named after this church, which was once whitewashed; the meaning of Matfelon is unclear.
Worth knowing: Its bricked-up platforms served as air-raid shelters in the Second World War, while the surface building was destroyed by bombing.
