Where the name comes from
Named after the district, first recorded in 1065 as Wenstede. The English Place-Names Society derives it from Anglo-Saxon waenn, a hill or mound, and stede, a place; an alternative reading takes the first element as "wain" or "wagon".
Worth knowing: Before it opened to passengers, the station's tunnels were used for aircraft production during the Second World War.
