Where the name comes from
Opened in 1908 as Wood Lane, on the Hammersmith branch, for the Franco-British Exhibition; it was renamed Wood Lane (White City) in 1920 and White City in 1947. The district was called the Great White City because the exhibition’s plaster pavilions looked like white marble.
