Residency · Ministry of Health lists, 2016–2026

Resident posts in your town’s hospital: 265 in 2026; in 2021–2025, half were taken on day one

A resident post means an open-ended employment contract with one particular public health unit. The Ministry publishes every year where the posts are and, day by day, how many are left. Here are all the lists from 2016 to 2026 on a map.

  • 265posts in the competition of 15 November 2026, 237 of them in hospitals
  • 4,481places, in 12 university cities
  • 49% / 24%of posts, and of places, taken on day one (2021–2025)

Look up your county ↓

Can the hospital in your town get a young doctor? One route the state uses is the post. On the map, the large circles are the university cities where residents train. The red dots are towns whose hospitals published posts, and a thread joins each dot to the centre where the doctor trains.

Tap a dot to see the hospital, the specialty and when the post was taken. Use the controls under the map to change the year. All numbers come from the lists published on rezidentiat.ms.ro, for the medicine domain.

#The places are in twelve cities

Residency places are packed into a few cities. Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Iași, Timișoara, Târgu Mureș and Craiova take 81% of the 4,481 places in the 2026 session, and Bucharest alone 30%. In 2016 the six took 88%.

The list has twelve cities, though (thirteen universities, since Bucharest has two). Arad, Brașov, Constanța, Galați, Oradea and Sibiu have 855 places in 2026, against 374 in 2016.

The list says where doctors train, not where they settle afterwards. These lists therefore cannot show whether doctors stay near the few university hospitals: the data for that is not in them.

#A place is not a post

The competition has one national ranking by score. Each candidate, in rank order, picks a place or a post. The difference is the contract.

Place

A fixed-term contract for the length of the residency, with the health unit to which the place was assigned. The candidate picks the university city and the specialty.

Post

An open-ended employment contract with the public health unit that advertised the post. The unit is the one on the list, usually a hospital: Abrud, Luduș, Hațeg, Toplița.

“… who become residents on a post conclude an individual employment contract of indefinite duration with the public health unit that advertised the post.” (translated)Methodology of the 15 November 2026 competition, art. 4(5), Monitorul Oficial (Romania’s official gazette) no. 840 of 5 October 2026

#Half the posts were taken on day one

After the first allocation day, 49% of posts were taken, against 24% of places (sessions 2021–2025 together). Every year looked the same: 44% to 52% of posts, 20% to 28% of places.

The same gap appears within specialties: in 21 of 22 specialties with at least 15 hospital posts over the five years, the share taken on day one is higher for posts than for places. In infectious diseases 62% of posts were taken on day one, against 8% of places; in cardiology 90% against 77%.

There is one ranking, so top scorers choose first. The list does not say why they prefer the post, but its open-ended contract is written into the rules.

At the end, of 1,828 posts offered in 2020–2025, 12 were left untaken. Of the places in 2021–2025, 1,102 were left untaken, peaking at 626 in 2022.

#The 12 posts left untaken

Across six sessions (2020–2025), 12 posts were still untaken in the last published statement. Nine are in Harghita county (Miercurea Ciuc, Gheorgheni, Toplița), one in Covasna, one in Dâmbovița and one in Brașov. Eight are in emergency medicine, three in family medicine (at the Harghita Ambulance Service) and one in neonatology.

The list does not say why. It shows only where: ten of the 12 posts are in Harghita and Covasna.

#Your town

Choose a county and, if you like, a specialty. See the posts hospitals in the county advertised, year by year, and when each was taken.

#What the lists do not show

  • Where doctors work after residency. The lists hold places and posts, not names or addresses. A taken post means a contract, not a guarantee that the doctor stays.
  • How many specialists work in your town. The datasets of the National Health Insurance House (CNAS) on data.gov.ro about outpatient doctors, up to 30 June 2026, are by health insurance house (usually one per county) or by specialty nationwide. They are not by town, and specialty is not crossed with house.
  • How many candidates applied for a post. The lists only say what remained after each day. One can speak of posts untaken at the end, not of posts with zero applicants.
  • Dental and pharmacy residency. The pages use the medicine domain only.

#How the numbers were worked out

Sources and method
  • Posts, by session: 2016 · 2017 · 2018 · 2019 · 2020 · 2021 · 2022 · 2023 · 2024 · 2025 · 2026. Official lists of the Ministry of Health, medicine domain (M). Each row: county, unit, ward, specialty, number of posts, university centre. Totals read were compared with those printed in the daily statements.
  • Places, by city: the “places” lists of the same session; each list’s total was checked against the sum over cities. The 2021 figures include the supplement (4,090 places).
  • What was left after each day: the “places and posts left unfilled” statements (2020 · 2021 · 2022 · 2023 · 2024 · 2025). Each post on the initial list was joined to the statements by its code (in 2022, by its serial number). The sum of posts left matched the printed total in all 18 statements read for 2020–2025.
  • Day one: the first statement of each session, from the evening of the first allocation day. The post–place comparison uses sessions 2021–2025 only; in 2020 places were supplemented without a list by specialty.
  • The town of each post: found from the health unit’s name in the county’s list of settlements; units with no town in their name (for example “Spitalul Județean de Urgență Alba”) are placed in the county seat. Administrative units (public health directorates, pension offices, ambulance services) are in the data but are not hospitals.
  • The rules: Methodology of the 15 November 2026 competition, published in Monitorul Oficial no. 840 of 5 October 2026 (art. 4(3)–(5)).
  • Map: administrative boundaries from geo-spatial.org (CC BY-SA 4.0), equirectangular projection with latitude correction.
  • Limit: “taken on day 1, 2 or 3” means the first moment the post no longer appears among those left. There are no names, scores or reasons.
