ETF
An investment fund that tracks a basket of shares or bonds and whose units trade on the stock exchange, like shares.
What is an ETF?
An ETF, or exchange-traded fund, is an investment fund that usually copies an index: it buys the shares in a known basket, all of them or a representative sample, in the basket's proportions. Units of the fund are bought and sold on the stock exchange, like shares.
With a single trade you own a sliver of hundreds or thousands of companies. The world developed-markets index (MSCI World) covers 1,280 companies from 23 countries (as of 31 August 2026); an ETF that copies it holds all of them or a representative sample.
An ETF is not good or bad in itself; it is a wrapper. The risk and reward come from what is in the basket: an ETF on the world's shares rises and falls with the world's markets, while one on a single industry can be very risky. What most ETFs on broad indices share is a low yearly cost, often below 0.3% a year.
It also matters what the fund does with dividends (pays them out or reinvests them), where it is domiciled, and in what currency you buy. In the European Union, small investors can buy funds harmonised under the UCITS rules.
1,000 lei in an ETF on a world index means a sliver of hundreds of companies, not 1,000 lei in a single firm.
What is the difference between an ETF and a share?
A share is a piece of a single company. An ETF is a fund holding many shares or bonds that trades on the exchange like a share.
Are there ETFs on the Bucharest Stock Exchange?
Yes, including one that tracks the BET index of the largest Romanian companies. Most ETFs on world indices, though, trade on large foreign exchanges, reachable through brokers.
How are ETF gains taxed in Romania?
For shares sold on the exchange, 3% or 6% if the broker withholds tax in Romania, 16% if you declare yourself. Fund units redeemed with the manager may follow other rules; check with your broker or ANAF.
