Metrorex Bucharest · official rules checked on 7 November 2026
Can you take your bicycle on the metro at this hour?
For ordinary bicycles, Metrorex, the Bucharest metro operator, splits the week in two: on working days access runs between 20:00 and 23:00, and on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays it is allowed permanently, throughout the train service programme. Folded bicycles and scooters travel outside those windows as hand luggage. Choose your moment and see the answer, plus the next window when the answer is no.
The answer for the chosen moment
Example: this Saturday, 21:15, ordinary bicycle
On Saturday, 7 November 2026, access with an ordinary bicycle is allowed permanently, throughout the service programme.
Board only through the first door in the direction of travel. Where you can, pick a less crowded train and take care not to dirty or inconvenience other passengers or damage the carriage.
The Metrorex week for bicycles, in two regimes#
The official Metrorex frequently-asked-questions document, Metrorex being the Bucharest metro operator, divides access for ordinary bicycles by the kind of day. On working days the window is the evening, between 20:00 and 23:00. On Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays access is “permanent”, worded in the access instruction as “throughout the train service programme”. The same division covers unfolded scooters, the document treating bicycles and scooters in one answer.
| The day | Ordinary bicycle | Folded bicycle or scooter |
|---|---|---|
| Monday–Friday, working days | 20:00–23:00 | As hand luggage, outside the window too |
| Saturday and Sunday | Throughout the service programme | As hand luggage, any time |
| A public holiday midweek | Throughout the service programme | As hand luggage, any time |
The working-day trap sits in the morning hour: an 08:00 trip to work with a bicycle has no matching morning window in the rules as read. The single evening window hosts the returns; the morning leg of a combined trip needs the folding solution or another vehicle.
Folded, the bicycle becomes hand luggage#
The same document says that outside the ordinary-bicycle windows, folded bicycles and scooters may be carried “as hand luggage”. The category change is the essence: the carried object travels as a compact piece of luggage kept beside the passenger, without the ready-to-ride vehicle status. For this form Metrorex recommends choosing a less crowded train and taking care that the bicycle does not inconvenience or dirty other passengers or damage the carriage.
The practical condition is actual folding before going down. A folding bicycle carried unfolded at weekday noon remains, for control purposes, an ordinary bicycle outside its window. The checker asks directly about the carried form, meaning how the object boards the train.
The extra-ticket side is not settled by the documents read for this page: no passage establishes a separate bicycle fee or pass. The question therefore stays open between “free” and a separate ticket price; the day’s fare situation is confirmed at the station office, and the person’s own travel title remains, of course, necessary for the wide access gate.
The first door in the direction of travel, and conduct on board#
The boarding rule read from the official documents is positional: entry with the bicycle happens “only through the first door in the train’s direction of travel”. Waiting on the platform is organised, therefore, by the direction of the arriving train, at its front end. The access instruction also mentions validating the travel title before using the special access gate, the wide gate used by passengers with bulky objects.
For conduct in the carriage, the documents stay with neighbourly principles: a freer train where possible, no inconveniencing or dirtying of passengers, no damage to the carriage. Any restriction announced in stations for a major event or for works outranks the general picture, so the departure station’s boards and announcements are read on the travel day.
The rules drawn here describe the Bucharest metro run by Metrorex. Surface trains, buses and trams keep their own bicycle regimes, which a combined trip meets separately.
What remains to be checked on the travel day#
The public-holiday calendar built into the checker covers 2026 and 2027. For a later date, the holiday box is at hand, and the official calendar of days off decides. The train service programme can take operating changes, especially late in the evening, so the last train’s time is checked for the concrete line and stations.
A general access rule guarantees no space in a particular train. Station staff can direct bicycle passengers to the next train when the first carriage is full, and the Metrorex recommendation to choose a less crowded train works in exactly that direction. For major events announced by the operator, the temporary restrictions are the ones that count that day.
Frequently asked questions#
Can I enter the metro with a bicycle at 18:00 on a Tuesday?
With an ordinary non-folding bicycle, no: on working days the window opens at 20:00. With the bicycle or scooter folded and carried as hand luggage, access is open outside the window too, under the Metrorex documents.
Are there banned hours for bicycles at the weekend?
On Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays access runs throughout the train service programme, under the Metrorex instruction as read. Station-announced restrictions for events or works can still apply locally.
Do electric scooters follow the same rules?
The Metrorex document treats bicycles and scooters in one answer: folded they travel as hand luggage, unfolded they follow the day windows. Special technical conditions for electric scooters were not found in the passages read.
Which door do I board through with a bicycle?
Only the first door in the train’s direction of travel. On the platform that means waiting towards the front end of the arriving train, in its direction of movement.
Is a separate bicycle ticket needed?
The documents read for this page establish no separate bicycle ticket, so the point stays to be confirmed at the station. Your own travel title is needed at the wide access gate regardless.
Tuesday is a public holiday. Which regime applies?
The weekend regime: access throughout the service programme. The checker recognises the Romanian public holidays of 2026 and 2027, including the Orthodox Easter and Pentecost days.
Sources and how they were checked#
- Metrorex, the official document “Can I access the metro with a bicycle/scooter? On what conditions?”, read on 7 November 2026 through a separate check, the site being unreachable to this session’s automated access
- Metrorex, the “Access supervision and passenger information” instruction, quoted in the same check for the all-service-hours wording
- Metrorex, the page on carrying bicycles and scooters by metro, unreachable to automated access on the checking day
The rules were re-read on 7 November 2026 from the official Metrorex documents through a separate check, because the institution’s site did not answer this session’s automated requests (page and document both timed out). Access can be restricted around major events or works, so station notices and the operator’s current announcements stand above any checker. Review recommended on any change to the Metrorex page and at the start of 2027, for the holiday calendar.
