An atlas of Romania's castles
Romania's heritage list holds 155 castles. Three of them — Bran, Peleș and Corvin — take more than half of all the openings every castle's encyclopedia article got over twelve months, and for 50 no article could be found at all. The others stand in villages in Mureș, Bistrița-Năsăud and Sălaj, and some of them are magnificent.
Between August 2025 and July 2026, the Romanian Wikipedia articles of the castles on the list were opened 283,148 times. Bran alone takes 22.5% of them, 100 times the median of the 105 castles that have an article. The top five take 61.2%.
In red, the five most-opened articles; the rest of this page is about the other 150.
The years run from 1201 to 1911. Each castle appears at the date the heritage list gives it. Hollow circles are dated only to a century, and enter at that century's start. Press any of them for its record.
Each castle's record — its year, its code, its photograph and the use recorded in 2015 — appears here.
The castles below meet three conditions: the heritage list classes them as being of national importance, a freely licensed photograph of them exists, and their articles are not among the five most-opened. There are 67 of them, ordered by how often their article was opened.

Of the 155 castles, 147 stand in Transylvania, Crișana, Banat and Maramureș. Oltenia has none.
What this map shows, before anything else, is which buildings the list calls a castle. The same list also holds 403 conace, manor houses, and those are commonest in exactly the south and east: 151 in Wallachia, 56 in Moldavia, 46 in Oltenia, against 112 in Transylvania. The boyar residences there enter the list as conace. The list does not explain the difference in naming.
The second surprise is age. Only 11 of the castles carry a dating earlier than 1500. Nearly two thirds are dated to the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Bran, dated by the list to the fourteenth century, and Peleș, begun in 1873 east of the mountains, both sit at the far ends of that distribution.
For 44 castles, the heritage list does not stop at the name: the use at that moment went into the monument's official designation. 'Castelul Mocioni, today a TB sanatorium'. 'Castelul Bethlen, today a warehouse'. 'Castelul Banffy, today the psychiatric hospital'. The table below holds all of them.
These are the uses recorded when the list was drawn up in 2015. Some buildings have since been restored and others have changed owners, so the table does not show what they are used for today. The designations are reproduced as they appear in the ministerial order.

The starting point is the 30,197 rows of the national heritage list. The list numbers an ensemble once and then each of its parts under the same code, so the park, the gate and the building appear separately; here all rows sharing a code were collapsed into one castle. The 254 rows containing the word 'castel' resolved to 155 distinct buildings.
For 74 castles the list gives a century and no year. Those enter the map at that century's start, are drawn as hollow circles, and their record shows the dating exactly as the list writes it. One castle carries no dating at all and stays out of the animation.
How well known a castle is was measured by how often its Romanian Wikipedia article was opened over twelve full months. Articles were attached to castles first by coordinates, then by a search on name and place. An attachment is accepted if the article has its own coordinates and the castle lies within six kilometres of them, or, where the article has no coordinates, if its title names the village. Several houses of the same family carry the same name — there are eight Bethlen castles and five Bánffy — so where two of them claimed one article, it stayed with the nearer castle.
For 50 castles neither pass found an article. The number says what was not found; some of them may still have one under a name the search did not reach.
The coordinates are the list's own. Some point at the village rather than the building, which is accurate enough for a position on the map; no distance between castles was computed from them. The photographs are those the list or the Wikidata record names on Wikimedia Commons. Only files carrying an explicit licence were kept, and 34 castles were left without a picture.
