The population register, feast by feast

Romania's name-day calendar: how many people in the register celebrate on each published day

In Romania, the feast day of the saint you are named after — your name day — brings greetings, flowers and sometimes a party to rival a birthday. Every year the news announces one feast at a time: how many Romanians celebrate Saint Mary, Saint John, Saint George. The numbers come from the national population register, and the directorate that keeps the register publishes, for each feast, the full table of name forms it counted. Put together, the 20 published tables set every name day counted so far on a single calendar, with the forms in the open and totals that can be re-added row by row.

Your first name: its day, its count and its place in the year

Type a Romanian first name as it appears on an identity card. The answer shows which published table holds the form, how many people in the register carry it, what the whole day totals and where the day ranks among the 20 published. Diacritics are optional.

Try, for example: Maria, Ionuț, Ilinca, Cătălin, Paraschiva.

one flame = 10,000 people in the day's table a chain starts at the exact date italic: a day with no saint of its own the dates Florii can fall on, 28 March – 1 May Mary: the same list again on 8 September

The largest name day in the register is Saint Mary: the forms in the table published for 2026 sum to 2,639,038 people, of whom 1,491,115 carry the name Maria itself (56.5% of the day). The directorate publishes the same list of names twice, for 15 August and for 8 September, in separate releases. Fourth largest, Florii — Palm Sunday — (1,764,618 people, 2026) has no saint of its own: its list mixes flower names with Angela, Daria and Delia.

The year as a church chandelier: one flame for every 10,000 people

In Romania's Orthodox churches a chandelier hangs beneath the dome as a ring of lights. Here the ring is the year: each published name day sits at its calendar date, and each flame stands for 10,000 people in that day's table, so every cluster of lights is the size of the crowd it shows. Where two days sit too close together, a cluster drops on a chain, but the chain still starts at the exact date. Florii sits at 5 April, its 2026 date; the dotted green line shows where it can fall in the years 2000–2099, between 28 March and 1 May. Select a cluster and the day's table opens, form by form. Untick the forms you would not count: as many flames go out as those forms weigh, and the total is re-added at once.

The 20 published days, largest to smallest

Each day's total is the sum of the rows in its published table, at the latest year printed in that table. The reference year stands beside every total, because the tables did not all appear in the same year: most show 2026 or the year before, and the Saint Catherine table dates from 2023. Under the ranking, every day opens its full list of forms with the register count for each.

What changes from year to year in the same tables

Many tables print two or three consecutive years for the same forms. The comparison shows crowds thinning and growing with no estimation added: the same rows, counted again.

Crowds that are thinning

The name Ion falls from 336,421 people in 2023 to 319,994 in 2025, 16,427 fewer in two years. Ioan falls too, from 447,697 to 436,873. Vasile loses 14,314 people in a single year, from 413,983 in 2024 to 399,669 in 2025. Saint John's day stays second largest, but its older forms thin visibly inside the directorate's own tables.

Crowds that are growing

Andrei rises from 497,083 people in 2023 to 515,905 in 2025, 18,822 more. Gabriel rises from 324,983 to 335,611, and Ionuț, the younger form of the 7 January day, climbs from 361,680 to 366,329 while Ion and Ioan fall. The same feast is slowly changing the names that keep it large.

What only the open lists show

The Saints Constantine and Helen table also holds Cosmin, with 116,691 people — a name attached to the day by custom, though it belongs to no saint of the day. Helen (Elena) alone counts 824,187 people, almost twice the form Constantin (416,627) and more than all the masculine forms in the table put together.

Christmas Day totals 706,747 people in its published table, almost all carrying Crist- names: Cristina, Cristian and their forms. The Orthodox calendar keeps Saint Christina on 24 July; the 25 December attachment follows the feast's name, not a saint of the day.

On Saint Catherine's day the most carried form in the table is masculine: Cătălin counts 168,511 people, more than Ecaterina (64,293) and Cătălina (64,361) together (128,654). And Ilinca appears in two tables — under Constantine and Helen with 30,798 people and under Saint Elijah with 31,027 — probably because the two releases counted the register at different moments.

How the numbers are made, and where they stop

The source is the Direcția Generală pentru Evidența Persoanelor in Romania's Interior Ministry, the directorate that keeps the National Register of Persons. For each feast, the directorate has published on its own site a release with the table of feminine and masculine given-name forms attached to the day and the people count for each form. The count covers the 20 days for which such a table exists and takes, from each table, the latest year printed. A day's total is the sum of its table's rows.

The counts cover Romanian citizens entered in the register. They are not the country's resident population and not the children born in a year. A person with two given names celebrated on different days can appear in two tables, and the releases do not show how compound given names were assigned to forms; for that reason the days are never added together anywhere on the page.

The form lists are the directorate's own, customary attachments included: Cosmin under Constantine and Helen, Angela under Florii, the Crist- names under Christmas, Valentin on 14 February, a date on which the Orthodox calendar keeps other saints. Saint Mary has two releases, for the Dormition (15 August) and the Nativity of the Mother of God (8 September), with the same list; the page shows her once, with both dates and the newer table. Palm Sunday (Florii) is movable: on the chandelier it sits at its 2026 date, 5 April, and the span 28 March – 1 May is computed from the Orthodox Easter reckoning for the years 2000–2099.

Feast dates are the Orthodox ones, taken from the directorate's releases where they give one and checked against an Orthodox calendar for 2026. The general Roman Catholic calendar keeps seven of these days on the same dates — George, Peter and Paul, Saint Mary (15 August and 8 September), Catherine, Andrew, Nicholas and Christmas — and others on different ones: Basil on 2 January, Joachim and Anne on 26 July, the archangels Michael and Gabriel on 29 September, Stephen on 26 December, one day before the Orthodox date, and the Western Palm Sunday fell on 29 March in 2026. The 7 January feast, Valentine, Theodore, Constantine and Helen, Elijah, Alexander, Parascheva and Demetrius do not appear on these dates in the general Catholic calendar. At Saint Parascheva, the smallest published day (40,366 people, 2025), the total is about 65 times smaller than at Saint Mary — the size of a name day does not follow the size of the feast.

Two tables were published as images, for Saint Demetrius and Saint Catherine; their rows were transcribed from the images and re-read against them. At Florii, the directorate's printed totals for the feminine forms differ from the sum of its own rows by 87 people in 2026 and by four people in 2024; the page uses the sum of the rows. One cell in the Saint Nicholas table, the 2023 value of the form Niculia, is misprinted (“2241.629”, probably two values run together) and was not guessed; the form enters the day's total with its 2025 value of 21 people, and only its 2023 comparison is missing.

Short answers

How many Romanians carry the name Maria?

In the table published for 2026, the form Maria counts 1,491,115 people. With every form in the table — Mariana, Marian, Marius and the rest — Saint Mary's day sums to 2,639,038 people.

Which is the largest name day?

Of the 20 published days, Saint Mary (15 August and 8 September), with 2,639,038 people in the 2026 table. Next is Saint John, on 7 January, with 1,953,014 people in the 2025 table.

Why are all 365 days not here?

The register directorate has published tables for 20 days. For the rest of the year no public per-name count of the register exists, and this page does not replace it with estimates.
