The Western Bias: Why Romanian Overloads the Left Hand
The standard QWERTY layout was patented in 1878 around English letter frequencies. When mapped to Romanian, the mechanical balance shifts dramatically westward. The five most frequent letters in Romanian are E (12.05%), I (9.68%), A (8.85%), R (6.84%), and T (6.32%).
Four of these five dominant letters sit exclusively on the left side of the keyboard: E, A, R, and T. In Romanian, the home row retains only 27.8% of keystrokes. The key vowels E, I, and U, alongside consonants R, T, O, and P, force fingers into constant upward travel toward the top row (QWERTYUIOP), which captures 54.2% of the workload. Typing in Romanian becomes a continuous vertical reach.
Layout Economics: The Cost of Diacritics
Typing proper Romanian diacritics (Ă, Â, Î, Ș, Ț) introduces distinct ergonomic trade-offs depending on layout configuration:
