Blue expanse of Qinghai Lake under a wide sky, 2017

A visual essay about Qinghai Lake

Qinghai Lake: the blue sea still growing on the Roof of the World

The 4,650.08 km² mirror of September 2024 — China's largest lake, an endorheic salt lake on the Tibetan Plateau — seen through Bird Island, the 2005 flu, the naked carp brought back from 2,592 tonnes, the Horse Year kora, the cycle tour and the national park. M01 M02 M05 M06 M09 M10

At more than 3,196 m above the sea, Qinghai is China's largest lake — and the only superlative still growing before our eyes: it added 28 km² in 2024, and a mythical lakeside statue stands partly submerged. Growth made visible. M01 M02

GROWTH

How big is Qinghai? 4,650.08 km², in September 2024

Qinghai Lake's water body measured 4,650.08 km² in September 2024, from satellite — China's largest lake, standing above 3,196 m over the sea. In 2024 alone it added 28 km². M01

The A2 ladder leaves no bare figure: the 2019 rung gives 4,549.38 km² at 3,196.24 m, 3.27 m above the level of 15 years before, and the live level rises about 20 cm a year. The literature altitude of 3,194 m and the live level above 3,196 m are always cited with their year and convention. As early as 2014, 中新网 noted the area kept expanding yet stayed below its historic maximum. M01 M04 M16

The return to its size of some seventy years ago is witnessed by a mythical statue standing partly submerged on the shore. The locator reads the geometry of OSM relation r404236 — never figures from tags, where ele=3205 and sqkm=5694 are stale. M02 M24

4,650.08 km², with the year beside it: the whole ladder or nothing. M01 M04

THE 2024 MIRROR

The satellite measurement, September 2024. M01

Four thousand six hundred fifty square kilometres and eight hundredths: the September 2024 mirror, measured from orbit. The figure carries its month and year — never bare. M01

THE 2019 RUNG

The 2019 rung: 4,549.38 km²

The provincial government report, 2019. M04

Five years earlier the provincial report gave 4,549.38 km² at a level of 3,196.24 m — 3.27 m above the level of 15 years before. Every figure with its year: the ladder, not a number. M04

TWENTY YEARS

+28 km² in 2024 alone

Unbroken growth since 2004. M01

Twenty years of continuous expansion since 2004, at roughly 20 cm a year in level — with 28 km² added in 2024 alone. The live level has passed 3,196 m; the older literature gives 3,194 m, with its convention. M01

SEVENTY YEARS

As some seventy years ago

Back to the size of a human lifetime ago. M02

The lake is back to its size of some seventy years ago — and the mythical lakeside statue, now partly under water, shows the growth with no figure at all. The mirror is swallowing its own shore. M02

SALT

Why does the salt stay? A lake with no outflow

Qinghai is China's largest inland saltwater lake — Koko Nor, the Mongols' “Blue Lake”, spread across the Tibetan Plateau. Salt is not a flaw: it is the definition. M05

Being endorheic, the lake has no outflow: rivers enter, the sky takes the water back, the salt remains. That is why the OSM salt=no tag is wrong — and why this essay never reads figures or nature from tags. M05

The frame is the “Third Pole” one: the Tibetan Plateau as Asia's Water Tower, whose warming and humidification push the mirror up by about 20 cm a year. M01 M05

An enclosed sea, growing because the plateau warms. M01 M05

NO OUTFLOW

No outflow: water leaves only through the sky. M05

The lake is endorheic — with no outflow to the sea. Water escapes only through evaporation, and the salt stays behind, year after year, millennium after millennium. M05

ISLAND

Bird Island: 100,000 wings, then silence

鸟岛 — Bird Island — is the lake's migratory heart: more than a hundred thousand birds a year, among them bar-headed geese, cormorants and gulls, at a stopover on Asia's flyways. M06

Since April 2018 no tourist sets foot on the island: slow TV carries it instead, the first in Qinghai. On the map the island is OSM inner way w1548991607 — unfindable by name in any Nominatim, so this essay pins it by id and coords, about 36.983/99.898. M06 M24

Here too the May-2005 H5N1 epizootic was written: more than 6,000 dead birds, the virus later spread toward Europe and Africa, the lake at the center of the wild-bird transmission debate. Reviewed facts only — no origin speculation. M07 M08

CARP

The naked carp: from 2,592 tonnes to 120,000

The naked carp — Gymnocypris przewalskii, the “huangyu” — is the endemic without which the lake would be a dead lake. In 2002 the stock had collapsed to 2,592 tonnes: one species and one lake held together by a thread. M09 M10

The comeback ladder runs through 100,400 tonnes in 2020 and about 120,000 in 2023 — 39 and 46 times the 2002 stock — up to 35.6% of the original stock, the Chinese mark of recovery. M09 M18

Behind it stand the sixth ban, 2021–2030, and more than 94 million fry released since 2002. The administrative turning point came in February 2024: the 濒危→易危 downlisting, at 12.03万吨. M10 M17

46 times the 2002 stock — and a downlisting best read in Chinese. M09 M17

THE COLLAPSE

2,592 tonnes in 2002

The 2002 stock: almost nothing. M09 M10

In 2002 only 2,592 tonnes of naked carp remained — the endemic Gymnocypris przewalskii, the “huangyu”, without which, the fishermen quoted by SCIO say, the lake would become a dead lake. M09 M10

THE COMEBACK

About 120,000 tonnes in 2023

39 times by 2020, 46 times by 2023. M09 M18

The comeback is a ladder: 100,400 tonnes in 2020 — about 39 times the 2002 stock — and about 120,000 tonnes in 2023, about 46 times. The Chinese sources add the mark: 35.6% of the original stock. M09 M18

THE BAN

The 2021–2030 ban

The sixth ban: 1 Jan 2021 – 31 Dec 2030. M10

The instrument is the sixth fishing ban, from 1 January 2021 to 31 December 2030, doubled by more than 94 million fry released since 2002. Twenty years of closed lake built the ladder. M10

THE DOWNLISTING

Downlisted in February 2024

From “endangered” to “vulnerable”. M17

In February 2024 the provincial government moved the carp from 濒危 to 易危 — from “endangered” to “vulnerable” — with the stock at 12.03万吨. The news came first in Chinese; this essay keeps it where it was born. M17

KORA

Kora: the lake with three names

The sacred geography begins with the name: 青海湖, the Mongol Koko Nor and the Tibetan mTsho sngon po, carried together as parallel endonyms — with no political framing beyond the sources. M05 M23

Pilgrims walk the kora — the ritual circling — and every Horse Year they come in mass: about 18 days on horseback, 23 days for one walker, against Przhevalsky's 8/15 estimate. M05

The 祭海 cult is alive in the 2026 Chinese essay, and the race-pilgrim colour comes from the Cyclingnews feature. No Commons kora frames exist — the chapter stays without pilgrim photos, by documentation, not by stretching. M22 M11

THE HORSE YEAR

The Horse Year kora

The mass circumambulation, every 12 years. M05

Every Horse Year of the 12-year cycle, pilgrims circle the lake in mass: about 18 days on horseback, and one walker did it in 23 days; Przhevalsky estimated 8 and 15. The kora is the mirror's sacred measure. M05

The 祭海 tradition — the cult, the “offering” made to the lake — is alive in a Chinese essay from March 2026, where it returns six times in the body. The lake's sacredness is still written today, in Chinese first. M22

RACE

The tour: 1,350 km at 3,000–5,000 m

Since 2002, July brings the Tour of Qinghai Lake: UCI 2.Pro class, stages between 3,000 and 5,000 m, about 1,350 km around the mirror — one of the world's highest races. M12

The 24th edition was ridden 6–13 July 2025 as the “Tour of Magnificent Qinghai”, with 22 teams: one WorldTeam, 8 ProTeams and 13 Continental. M13

The race-pilgrim colour — peloton and pilgrims on the same road — comes from the Cyclingnews feature, used as atmosphere only. No Commons race frames exist: the chapter stays unillustrated, by documentation. M11

PARK

The park: sand stopped, steps finished

The north-eastern desertification was stopped with more than 500,000 mu treated — 33,333 hectares — while grassland reached 60% cover, and sandy, bare and saline-alkali lands shrink. M03

The park ladder runs from the June-2022 approval to the July-2025 announcement: all necessary steps toward the national park, completed. Between them, the November-2024 record area; after them, the 2026 ranger-and-geese features — but no 2026 area record, unclaimed here. M14 M15

The kicker stays the release's: the plateau warming and humidification that feed the growth are “posing new challenges”. This essay ends where the question begins. M01

Sand stopped, steps finished — and new questions. M03 M15

In July 2025, SCIO announced that all necessary steps toward the national park had been completed. The 2024–26 news ladder is whole — and this essay claims no 2026 area record, because none was found. M15

THE HONEST KICKER

Growth poses new challenges

Growth asks new questions. M01

The same warming and humidification that swell the mirror are “posing new challenges” — the release's honest phrase. A growing lake is not necessarily a calm lake. M01
