From the French bel assis, "well situated". Belsize Park comes from the 17th-century manor house and parkland built by Daniel O'Neill for his wife, the Countess of Chesterfield.
Worth knowing: It is one of eight Underground stations with a deep-level air-raid shelter beneath it.
