Where the name comes from
From the Anglo-Saxon words ham and stede, meaning homestead, of which it is a cognate. Before opening, the station was to be called Heath Street, after the road junction it stands on.
Worth knowing: Its platforms are the deepest on the Underground, 58.5 m below ground, and the original platform tiles still read Heath Street.
