Why is it called Highgate?

Where the name comes from
Highgate takes its name from the Bishop of London's hunting estate, enclosed by a high deer-proof hedge: 'the gate in the hedge'. The bishop kept a toll-house where a main road north out of London entered his land.
Worth knowing: Above the Underground platforms, the platforms of the old surface station still stand; they were last used in 1954.
