Where the name comes from
Named after Holloway Road. The origin of Holloway is disputed: one view derives it from a hollow way, a dip worn by cattle and water on the droving route to Smithfield; another from hallow, as part of the pilgrim route to Walsingham. No documents support either.
Worth knowing: One of its shafts held an experimental spiral escalator built by Jesse W. Reno; it failed and was never used by the public.
