Named after the town of Chipping Ongar in Essex. Ongar means "grass land"; Chipping is from Old English for a market or market-place, as in Chipping Norton and Chipping Barnet.
Worth knowing: Its eastern buffers remain the point from which all distances on the London Underground are measured.
