Where the name comes from
Opened in 1908 as Northolt Junction; renamed South Ruislip & Northolt Junction in 1932 and South Ruislip in 1947. Ruislip appears in Domesday Book as Rislepe, thought to mean "leaping place on the river where rushes grow".
Worth knowing: RAF Northolt was named after the station's original name, Northolt Junction, following the practice of naming airfields after the nearest station.
