Where the name comes from
Named after Stanmore. Domesday Book (1086) records it as Stanmere, from Old English stan, "stony", and mere, "a pool". The name is first documented in a charter of 793.
Worth knowing: A rival station, Stanmore Village, was designed to look like a small English church, with a spire and gargoyles.
