Why is it called West Kensington?

Where the name comes from
Opened in 1874 as North End (Fulham) and renamed West Kensington in 1877. "West Kensington" was a marketing name: two Victorian developers persuaded the authorities to rename the hamlet of North End to sell their houses. Kensington comes from Chenesitone, "Chenesi's ton" (homestead).
Worth knowing: Despite its name, the station is in Hammersmith and Fulham, not Kensington.
