How many lives does the Evening Star have?

Ten years lie between the Berlin draft and the Bucharest volume. Eight months and four stanzas lie between the Vienna printing and the Bucharest one. This is the story of the 98 stanzas, with the cuts on the table.

Everything begins with a tale gathered by a German. The Silesian Richard Kunisch had printed in 1861 the story of “The Girl in the Golden Garden”: an emperor's daughter locked in a castle inside a golden garden, guarded by a dragon. Eminescu notes the source cryptically in his notebooks, “the German K.”; only Moses Gaster reconstructs the reference.

Around 1873, in Berlin, the tale becomes “Fata-n grădina de aur”, a poem in ottava rima running to 488 lines: “A fost odat-un împărat...”. The tale's ease is already there, but not the unhappy genius: misunderstood Hyperion is added on later returns, in another piece of the constellation, “Peste codri stă cetatea”.

Several drafts survive, some as long as the finished poem; Perpessicius calls them “standalone types”. Nothing of that night train on which, says the legend, everything was written in one breath.

On 17 April 1882 Eminescu is Junimea's guest in Bucharest and reads “Legenda Luceafĕrului”. He then works closely with Titu Maiorescu, who helps him with critical insight; in these exchanges the poem gains its celebrated final stanza.

On 24 April 1882, the second reading: Maiorescu notes in his diary the “beautiful legend”, plainly, “Luceafărul”. From here the critic carries the poem through the salons, with public readings in Bucharest and Buftea into January 1883, before Eminescu, Petre P. Carp, Alexandru B. Știrbei and Ioan Slavici.

The hand of 1882 is still visible: the “Legenda Luceafĕrului” manuscript is kept at the Romanian Academy Library, ms. rom. 2256, f. 45v. It is the link between drafts and print.

In April 1883 the poem first appears in Vienna, in the almanac of the “România Jună” Academic Social-Literary Society: “Luceafĕrul”, 20 pages, 39 to 58, signed “M. Eminescu”. All 98 stanzas are there, including the whole bargaining between Hyperion and the Demiurge.

In August, Convorbiri literare reprints the poem. Between the two printings the poet falls gravely ill and is taken to the Oberdöbling sanatorium near Vienna. The Convorbiri text could not be collated for this page: no open scan was reachable, so that edition is marked uncollated, and its number and pages are not stated.

The review that takes it up is the Junimea organ, founded by Maiorescu in 1867, monthly, moved from Iași to Bucharest. Eminescu, Creangă and Caragiale had published there; now Luceafărul arrives too, in 98 stanzas.

Around November 1883 Maiorescu prepares the edition alone: he cuts four stanzas, the bargaining ones between Hyperion and the Demiurge, “to improve flow”. Stanza 77 falls (“Ei numai doar durează-n vânt...”) with stanzas 82–84, in which the Demiurge offers the voice that moves mountains, the earth in pieces and the masts. What falls, in other words, is exactly where the god shows himself generous.

Then stanza 81: its last two lines change hands: “Cere-mi cuvântul meu de-ntâi, / Să-ți dau înțelepciune?” becomes “Tu ești din forma cea dintâi, / Ești vecinică minune.” The difference shows in the two printings, set face to face below; no source found says who wrote the new lines, so the page marks their author undocumented.

The Poesii volume comes out at Socec with the year 1884 on the title page and the preface dated “București, Decemvrie 1883”. Maiorescu writes there plainly that the poet never saw the volume: “Publicarea se face în lipsa poetului din Țară... nu sunt dar revĕzute de Eminescu”. Later Ibrăileanu keeps the cut but prints the missing stanzas as an appendix, and today's editions give all 98 stanzas.

Three myths, briefly

What is said about Luceafărul, and what the papers show.

  1. He wrote it in one night, on the train, in a single breath. False.

    Perpessicius calls the night-train legend “as absurd as can be”: the poem ripened over ten years, from 1873 to 1883, and several drafts survive, some as long as the finished poem. The 1882 “Legenda Luceafĕrului” manuscript (ms. rom. 2256, f. 45v) is only one link; the first, the 1873 octave, opens with “A fost odat-un împărat”.

  2. It first appeared in Convorbiri literare, in April 1883. Backwards.

    The first printing is the Vienna “România Jună” almanac, April 1883, pp. 39–58; Convorbiri literare only in August, and Poesii in December. Quoting “Convorbiri, April 1883” mixes two printings up.

  3. Maiorescu spoiled the poem by cutting it. Up to a point.

    The cut is real but small: 4 stanzas out of 98, the bargaining ones with the Demiurge, taken out “to improve flow”, plus two lines rewritten in stanza 81. And the preface says outright that Eminescu never saw the volume. Today's editions print all 98 stanzas; Maiorescu's scissors show only in Poesii.

Sources and method

How it was made

The reading text of the 98 stanzas follows the almanac printing through the ro.wikisource transcription, with modernized spelling; stanzas 77, 81–84: transcribed from the page images and quoted ad litteram.

Every stanza's presence in Poesii was checked by automatic alignment of the OCR against the 98 stanzas, by page arithmetic (pp. 277–300 hold exactly 94 four-line stanzas) and by reading the cut's neighbors (pp. 296–297), the first page (p. 277) and the last (p. 300). Word-level collation beyond the five stanzas was not done.

The Convorbiri literare text (August 1883) is marked uncollated: no open scan was reachable during research. The author of the stanza 81 rewrite is likewise undocumented.

The game uses only real, published lines: the almanac finals, the decoys from “Fata-n grădina de aur” (1873) and the Poesii rewrite, p. 297.
