Climate · summer nights in Romania

The nights that no longer cool: tropical nights in every Romanian town, 1950–2026

A tropical night is one when the minimum temperature never drops below 20 °C. On Romania’s plains they have multiplied several times over: in Galați, on the Danube, from 5.5 a summer in 1961–1990 to 28.9 in 2016–2025; in Craiova, from 1.9 to 12.4. Of the people who live in Romania today, almost one in three lives in an area where the summers of 2016–2025 brought at least five such nights on average. With the summers of 1961–1990 it would have been 4.5%.

One row = one summer, 1 June to 31 August. One cell = the minimum temperature of one night, from a grid of squares about 11 × 8 km built from weather stations. The bar on the right counts the summer’s tropical nights. Summer 2026 is provisional (preliminary data). 1950–1960 is less certain: the grid had few stations then.

Choose a place to see its summers. The picture now shows the whole country: on each night, the share of today’s population living where the night was tropical.

The top rows are the summers of the 1950s; the bottom rows are now. The picture places today’s population (the 2021 census) in every past summer: until the 1990s, on any summer night, places with a tropical night held almost always under a tenth of them. On 6 August 2017, 77%. Per person, the average was 1.3 tropical nights a summer in 1961–1990 and 6 in 2016–2025.

Choose a place and a year of birth: the picture switches to that place’s summers, with the ten summers of childhood (ages 5 to 14) framed beside the last five.

#Where tropical nights multiplied

Each square is about 11 × 8 km and shows the average number of tropical nights a summer there. Play the years and watch the amber spread from the Danube valley and the Black Sea coast into the Bărăgan plain, Oltenia and the west. Hills and mountains stay in the shade: in Brașov, in the Carpathians, the 2016–2025 average is 0; in Cluj-Napoca, 0.3.

#Three weeks in a row: only in Dobrogea and the Danube Delta

Tropical nights come more often, but inland they rarely join into long runs. In Bucharest, the longest run in the 11 km grid is still the one from 1988: 7 nights. Craiova: 12 nights, in 2024; Galați: 18, in 2010 and 2012. The nights come far more often, but still in pieces.

In Romania, runs of three weeks or more happen only in Dobrogea, the region between the Danube and the Black Sea, and in the Delta: Constanța 22 nights (in 2012 and 2014), Medgidia and Murfatlar 22 each, Sulina, at the mouth of the Danube, 42 in 2001. The sea and the Delta cool slowly at night, which may keep the nights warm. Only 2.8% of people live where a run of 21 nights has ever been seen; 16% where a two-week run has.

Longest run of tropical nights, 1950–2025: the top 12 towns, then four inland cities.

Runs are counted from 1 June to 31 August; a run that continues into September is cut at the end of the summer.

#How many people now live in the path of warm nights

The count starts from today’s population (the 2021 census) and the summers of each period. On the climate of 1961–1990, 4.5% of them would have lived where a summer brought five or more tropical nights on average. On the summers of 2016–2025, 31%. At ten nights or more: 2.0%, then 20%.

The result is sensitive to one place, Bucharest, home to one Romanian in eleven. Counted in the square on its northern edge (Băneasa), where the weather station is, it is 31%; counted in the city-centre square, which the search also uses, it rises to 40%. The page gives the lower figure.

For 33% of people, a tropical night is still rare in the grid: fewer than one a summer in 2016–2025. Most live in hill and mountain areas, where the grid catches fewer tropical nights than the stations (see below). For them the page also shows the warmest night of the summer: it rose in all 138 towns in this group.

#Bucharest: the hot city and the grid that smooths it

The 11 km square at the centre of Bucharest, Romania’s capital, averaged 2.1 tropical nights a summer in 1961–1990 and 8.4 in 2016–2025. Summer 2024 had 20.

The grid cannot see the street. It is built from weather stations, and Bucharest’s Băneasa station sits on the edge of the city among parks and forest. Asphalt and walls in the centre usually hold heat at night longer than an 11 km square shows, so on the streets of the centre the real number is probably higher. Indoor temperature also depends on the building; the grid does not estimate it.

For what a warm night does to the body and how people cope, see the explainer The night that never cools. For deaths in Romania’s heatwaves, county by county, Heatwave deaths. For how hot each Bucharest street gets on a summer day, How hot is your street.

#How far these figures can be trusted

The grid (E-OBS, 0.1°) is a temperature map built from weather stations. It was compared night by night with 25 Romanian stations that feed it. In 1991–2025, of the 7,342 tropical nights measured at those stations, the grid showed 6,510 as tropical (89%). Of the 6,691 nights the grid shows as tropical, 181 were not tropical at the station.

The grid usually counts fewer than the stations, more so in the past (82% in 1961–1990) and far fewer in the hills: at Râmnicu Vâlcea it showed 69 of 162, at Cluj-Napoca 6 of 12. Sometimes it counts more: at Craiova, 382 against 330 at the station. The stations show the same rise as the grid: at the 21 stations with nearly complete records in both periods, 4.2 tropical nights a summer in 1961–1990 and 9.8 in 1991–2025 (the grid, on the same nights: 3.5 and 8.9).

These stations are the ones the grid is built from, so the comparison is not an independent check. Two airport stations are not part of the grid: Timișoara and Suceava, with sparse records. There, in 1991–2025, of 27 tropical nights at the stations, the grid showed 14 (52%); at Suceava, 1 of 8. The sample is small, but it points the same way: the grid’s numbers are more likely too low than too high.

The 1950s are the least certain. The Galați and Constanța series enter the grid only from 1961: for the years before, the grid showed 15 of the station’s 51 tropical nights at Galați, 71 of 127 at Constanța, 36 of 92 at Sulina. Across all 13 stations with data, 63% in 1950–1960. That is why the comparison period starts in 1961.

#Questions

What is a tropical night?

A night when the minimum temperature does not fall below 20 °C. Meteorologists use this threshold (the TR20 index) to count warm nights; it is not a medical limit.

How many tropical nights does Bucharest have a summer?

In the square at the city centre, on average 2.1 in 1961–1990 and 8.4 in 2016–2025. Summer 2024 had 20. On the streets of the centre there are probably more.

Where in Romania are tropical nights most common?

On the Black Sea coast and in the Danube Delta. In Sulina the 2016–2025 average is 55.1 nights a summer, and the longest run was 42 nights, in 2001. Inland: Galați, Brăila, the Danube valley and Oltenia.

Why does the weather station in my town differ from the grid?

The grid smooths temperature over an 11 km square; a station measures one point. Usually the grid shows fewer tropical nights (in 1991–2025 it showed 89% of the stations’), but sometimes more, as in Craiova. A town centre is usually warmer at night than the square’s average.

What data is used?

Daily minimum temperatures from E-OBS v34.0e (Copernicus and ECA&D), 0.1° grid, 1950–2025, plus the preliminary monthly file for 2026. Checked against stations from NOAA GHCN-Daily.

#Method

Daily minimum temperatures were taken for every 0.1° square (about 11 × 8 km) in Romania, from 1 June to 31 August, 1950–2025. A night is tropical if the day’s minimum is at least 20 °C; in summer the minimum almost always falls at night, and meteorologists count tropical nights this way (the TR20 index). The count, the longest run and the warmest night (the TNx index) are computed for every complete summer.

The comparison periods were fixed before the count: 1961–1990 against 2016–2025. “The last five summers” means 2021–2025. Childhood means the summers at ages 5 to 14. Summer 2026 comes from a preliminary file with fewer stations; it is shown but enters no average.

Each place is read in its own square; places on the sea or the Danube that fall on water take the nearest land square. People are counted with each commune’s and town’s population at the 2021 census, with Bucharest in the Băneasa square.

The page does not publish the measured temperatures, only the class of each night (below 16, 16–18, 18–20, 20–22, 22–24, 24 °C and above) and the warmest night of each summer, rounded to a quarter of a degree.

A reanalysis (ERA5-Land) gave, inland, up to five times as many tropical nights as the station-checked grid (in Craiova, 47.2 a summer in 2021–2025 against 18.6), so it was set aside.
