Under the epidermis
The relief comes from a change in volume.
Wilder-Smith and Chow tracked circulation in the hand as the wrinkles appeared. Flow velocity fell in the ulnar vessels, the digital arteries and most strongly in the fingertip pulp. Their conclusion is specific: immersion wrinkles are linked to vasoconstriction in the digit pulp.
The response depends on sympathetic innervation. A hand with a severed digital nerve does not follow the same wrinkling pattern.
Handling wet objects
Here the data become more interesting and less certain.
Davis analysed 516 participants: 231 in the dry condition, 74 with wet fingers and 211 with wrinkled fingers. In the rising phase, the mean rates were 0.409 N/s for dry, 0.676 N/s for wet and smooth, and 0.501 N/s for wrinkled.
Wrinkled fingers reached force coordination close to the dry condition, while wet fingers without wrinkles used a larger safety margin. That supports a link between skin relief and grip in that task. It does not describe every wet object or establish that wrinkles were certainly selected for this purpose.
What remains open
Wrinkled skin does not change every sense.
A separate study by Haseleu and colleagues found no significant effect of immersion wrinkles on tactile acuity or dexterity in the tasks they tested. The results can sit together: one experiment can find more calibrated grip, while another finds the same general dexterity.
Temperature and time change the appearance. Laboratory tests use controlled conditions, while a person's response varies with circulation, skin and nerves. A home observation shows a phenomenon without assessing autonomic nervous-system health.
