Romania's mortality tables, 1968–2024
The Moving Target
Statistics promise a boy born in Romania today 72.8 years, and a girl 80.3. That promise is an average, and the average mixes long lives with lives cut short. A man already past 60 can expect to reach 78; past 80, the expected end sits at 87; at 90, the target climbs toward 94. This page follows 100,000 people born the same year as you, through the death risks measured in every year since 1968, and shows where your target has moved.
An average nobody lives
The 72.8 years on paper are not the age at which the typical man dies. They are the average of every possible fate, computed on the day of birth, while every accident at 30 and every heart attack at 55 still sits in the calculation. As a person crosses those risks without stopping, the average of those remaining climbs. A 60-year-old man no longer shares his statistics with those who never reached 60, so his target has moved to 78.2. At 80, it stands at 87.3. At 90, at 94.
Which yields a sentence that sounds impossible and is merely arithmetic: a man who reaches his exact life expectancy still has, on average, 11 more years ahead. The staircase below never drops beneath its starting point, at any age, for either sex. For women it climbs more gently, 14 years between birth and 90, precisely because fewer female lives are lost early and the average has less to recover.
Your column

For people born before 1968, the first year with measured risks in the series, the column starts from the age their generation had reached by then. The column measures mortality only: emigrants stay in it, because the risks are annual rates rather than head counts. The last measured year is 2024.
Where people actually die
The same 72.8-year average also hides the shape of death. Lay out the ages at which the 100,000 people of the 2024 table die, and the pile does not sit around the average. Half of the men live past 75, and the peak of the curve, the single year in which the most men die, is 80. For women, the 80.3 average sits under a median of nearly 84 and a peak at 87. The average always comes out lower than the typical life because early deaths, few in number but heavy in the calculation, drag it down.
The practical reading is simple: a life expectancy of 72.8 years does not mean the typical man dies at 73. It means his fate sits somewhere between 75, the threshold half the column crosses, and 80, the most crowded year of death.
Three decades standing still
The men's line tells a story few European countries share. In 1968, a newborn boy was promised 66.0 years on paper. In 1997, nearly three decades later, he was promised 65.2, less than at the start of the series, with an all-time low of 65.1 reached as early as 1969 and a peak of only 67.7 in 1976. Women gained 3 years over the same stretch. Only after 1997 does the male line move, gaining 7.6 years by 2024.
The pandemic shows as a deep notch: from 71.9 years in 2019, a boy's promise falls to 69.2 in 2021, and the recovery only clears the pre-pandemic level in 2023.
Part of the recent climb comes from a single place: the first year of life. In 1968, one child in 18 did not live to see a first birthday; in 2024, one in 159. A child who cleared that first birthday in 1968 gained nearly 4 years over the promise made at birth, so heavily did infant mortality weigh on the average.
The 1968 generation, measured on its real road
A single year's table is a snapshot: it applies that year's risks to an entire lifetime. A real generation crosses different risks at every age, those of the years it actually lived. For anyone born from 1968 onward, the series allows the road to be rebuilt step by step: the risk of 1968 at age 0, of 1969 at age 1, and so on through 2024.
The result for the first complete generation in the series: of 100,000 boys born in 1968, roughly 75,683 were alive at 57. Nearly one in four stopped along the way. The snapshot of their birth year promised more, 79,508, but the 1990s, with their rising mortality, cut below the promise. Women born in 1968 crossed the same years with a different balance: 86,699 alive at 57, above the 85,211 promised at birth. The men of that generation lived below their own year's promise, the women above it.
The gap
Within the European Union, Romania ranks 25th of 27 in life expectancy, for both sexes. A boy born here is promised 72.8 years, 6.1 below the Union average, ahead of Bulgaria and Latvia; a girl is promised 80.3, 3.8 below the average. The distance between the sexes, 7.5 years, is the fourth widest in the Union, behind the three Baltic states, against a European average of 5.2.
Translated into fates, with the risks of 2024 held still: of 100 men aged 20, 83 would reach 60 and only 37 would reach 80. Of 100 women the same age, 93 would reach 60 and 62 would reach 80.

How to read it
A mortality table takes the death risks measured in a single calendar year, at every age, and applies them to an imaginary column of 100,000 newborns. Life expectancy "at birth" is the average of that column; expectancy "at 60" is the average of those who got there. The personal column on this page links the tables along a diagonal: the risk of your birth year at age 0, of the following year at age 1, and so on, year by year, up to the last measured year.
Limits
The column's continuation beyond 2024 uses that year's risks, frozen. If mortality keeps falling, as it has done almost without interruption since 1997, the real targets will sit further away than the ones displayed. The risks are annual rates measured on Romania's resident population, so emigration does not empty the column. The series covers ages up to 95; whatever happens after is gathered into the last step. A generation's diagonal is an approximation: people born in the same year cross each age astride two calendar years, and this page uses the first.
